CHRIS & KAI
Two young talents bursting on the scene…
Original debut release on Yoshitoshi Recordings

Two emerging fresh talents on the NYC & international dance music scene, we are proud to introduce CHRIS & KAI. Named Christopher Ruskis and Wen-Kai Ying respectively, these two fresh-faced DJs-cum-producers are expecting their first double-pack vinyl release on Yoshitoshi Recordings this November 2003.

At only 22 (Chris) & 24 years old (Kai), these two already have a long history of musical leanings. Chris’ musical obsession began early at age 13,buying records and studying at a recording studio the following year. By 16, he was organizing parties at school and doing live Pas, and while still attending high school, he attended NYU’s Music Technology school. He plays the guitar, drums and bass guitar and still frequents the Metropolitan Opera and various classical and Broadway shows for musical inspiration from across the board.

Also at an early age, Kai started off with piano lessons that led to a year of study at the Julliard music school. Then his discovery of MP3s and the technology that encompasses it allowed him to start producing in secluded New Hampshire while finishing his studies at Dartmouth. Isolated and alone, producing cannot be qualified without the visceral experience of listening to music. Thus, following the sound of the beat, Kai moved to NYC and met with now studio partner Chris. The duo spent countless nights at legendary nightclub Twilo in NYC being inspired by the fresh new sounds of top international talent in the late 90s.

After heading to Winter Music Conference with demos in tow, the duo made the rounds and one CDR landed in the right hands. Chris & Kai handed a copy to dj/production duo Deep Dish, who own the internationally renowned, US house label Yoshitoshi. They were immediately signed to the house imprint and are on the verge of their original debut release - a double 12” vinyl pack ‘Catch Me’ / ‘Suffocation.’

In the studio, they specialize in beats & groove that utilize the essential ingredients and production techniques to create quality club music. Their first remixes on Hooj were for the Aphasia ‘Acapulco’ track under their Chris & Kai moniker as well as an alias Naboombu. Not only limited to the house music genre, Chris & Kai have been working on the hip-hop end of the business. They’re currently working on an EP project with Walt Anderson AKA Bless from P. Diddy’s MTV Making of the Band for release in early 2004. More details to follow on this explosive project coming soon.

On the dancefloor, Chris & Kai have exploded onto the NYC underground scene, pushing a sound based more on variety and range, blurring the lines between the many genres of house and techno music; from deep house to progressive, tribal house to techno, Chris & Kai constantly strive to create an evolution of future sounds.

As equal parts producers & DJs, there’s no telling how far this dynamic duo will go. Looking ahead with the support of Dubfire & Sharam of Deep Dish at Yoshitoshi, and with DJs like John Digweed, Danny Howells, Sander Kleinenberg caning their tracks, the future is at their
grasp. Catch them on their rise up…

Chris & Kai feat. Jade Starling ‘Catch Me’ / ’Suffocation’ (Yoshitoshi)

With this release, Chris & Kai have established themselves as producers to be taken seriously. ‘Catch Me’ is a cover of the 80’s hit ‘Catch Me I’m Falling’ by Pretty Poison. On the flip side, ‘Suffocation’ is a quality, deep, dark and moody track that has been devastating floors from New York to Miami.

"Chris & Kai's new cut 'Suffocation' is simply amazing." - Sharam of Grammy winning duo Deep Dish

“Catch Me (Frozen in Time Vocal mix) - best thing [we’ve] heard in a while.” –Release Records

Sumo ‘Yes We Will’ (YO)

For the SUMO (brothers Alex & Frederic Sumi) debut release ‘YES We Will’ on YO! Recordings, budding Yoshitoshi artists Chris & Kai deliver two remixes of their own; one deep and beautiful – the other tribal and nasty. The two different styles showcase Chris & Kai’s versatility among genres. These tracks have been Sharam’s (Deep Dish) favorite tunes of summer 2003.
