Agreed it was a beautiful looking moving. Lots of really nice shots. The story is kind of weak if you ask me. I actually fell asleep during the movie I must be conditioned by hollywood to have something constantly going on. :?
The fight scenes are DOPE.

not really... most movies that are released in the US aren't released overseas for a long time after. it just depends where the product is released. since terrentino made this movie though, that is strange that it is released here so late.
swedetech - was it a formal release in sweden or one of those "promotional" copies you can get waaaay early? for example, my friend in china sent me a harry potter movie on dvd in dvd quality before it was even released in the theater in the US.

^ It was the "original" release... this movie was NOT made by Tarrantino, it was made by a chinese director (Zhang Yimou) - I believe Tarrantino put his name on it cause he brought it over here or some shitt... kinda funky!

He didn't really put his name on it. It says in the trailor "Brought to you by" not directed by. And yes, Tarrantino was responsible for the talks which got Miramax to pick it up, and show it in the states. He had to cut 10 minutes out of the film for Miramax to agree, and he helped the director decide what was best for the American audience, and what could be taken out. It was a joint project.

It's one of the better films of 2002 and deserved the Oscar it was nominated for in 2003 for best foreign film, just for the look and amazing cinematography as well as the astonishing wire fighting and concepts for fight scenes (the fight in the forest with the falling leaves and the fight in the rain are two of the most astonishing things I've seen in some time).
There's now a director's cut out on DVD which has 24 extra minutes of footage and the international version (which is what is in theatres now). And if you think this was good, wait until House of Flying Daggers comes out (from Zhyang Yimou, director of Hero), which is about 10 times better if you can believe it.

It's showing at the Toronto Film Festival (Sept 9th thru 18th) and then is most likely to see release in early December as far as North America. That is, assuming that Miramax doesn't sit on it for another two fucking years before getting the push from Tarantino.
I would expect to see the DVD surface though in a few months.

One of the best movies of the year, the story had me captivated and I didn't know whos story to believe. Fight scenes were wonderful and only trumped by the colors.

OK hope this clears some things up on this thread...This is off of imdb
Miramax originally acquired the U.S. distribution rights in 2002 after the film's huge success in Asia. The film never materialized. Unable to find an official U.S. version, the film has gained a cult following in the States via "official" copies of the DVD from other countries.
Miramax, the distributor, apparently cut out 20 minutes from the movie because they found that part to be "too Asian and confusing" for western audiences. Then-Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein made a deal with Quentin Tarantino that he'd release the film uncut if Tarantino would allow a "Quentin Tarantino Presents" tag at the beginning of the film. Tarantino agreed.

Please stop saying that Tarantino made this movie. He might have kicked Weinstein's ass into finally releasing it but that about all he did. Zhang Yimou is an important Asian filmmaker and you guys should do yourselves a favor and check out some of his other movies. "Raise the Red Lantern" immediately comes to mind.
Check out a small dvd distributor in Florida specializing in Asian movies, YumYumAnime.com. I love me some chop socky.

ahhh, see , I was under the impression Taratino directed it, but i was also surprised that it came out so soon after the Kill Bills, didnt seem like he had time to do another movie. Thanks for clearing that up!
