MS's plan to compete with Open Source OS's, release a crapper version of Windows for cheaper!
Low Res Graphics
Limited Networking options
Only 3 programs at once?!
This had better be seriously cheap - if not free!!

if they release this as an OPEN SOURCE OS, believe me in a few years, XPLite will become even better than Longhorn...

it's a start esp if it is open source ... other people can make it work.

Don't think it would be open source, they just want to compete with the open source guys on price... MS would never give away their code!

"Analysts say Linux poses a growing threat to Microsoft's dominant Windows operating system, used on more than 90% of the world's computers."
what are they worried about? 90% is a huge strong hold.

Linux is a much more stable system but the problem is Windows is much more readily avaliable to people to get. Maybe some day Linux will take over as the number op system. But I don't see it happening any time soon though.

it's kinda like the hot slut with an evil heart vs the Mediocre girl that will love for the rest of you life. for some reason the hot slut wins most of the time, until you realize that have a std. so you get on a train and get that country girl.

The software giant said the new system, named Windows XP Starter Edition, would go on sale in Asia in October.

I planned to make the change to Linux, but after 2 solid days of doing nothing but screwing up my computer, I gave up! I consider myself fairly computer literate, but I couldn't get Linux working...
If someone like me can't do it, it's still a long way off being generally accepted. Try as you might, it's near impossible to escape Microsofts grasp!

ian. linux is not easy ... esp if you have been in the microsux world for a long time. it's a very slow learning curve, very slow. if you have a dummy box, play on that, do not do it on your main system. you can wipe everything and not even know it. do not give it up, it's actually fun once you get it going. i promise.

Microsoft doesn't just want the market share -- they want the leverage it gives it over the consuming public. If MS's market share drops, it loses more than just those raw numbers -- it loses the ability to bully us into using other MS or MS-friendly products, which in turn spurs demand for MS operating systems. Vicious cycle.

The company said the cut-price software was designed for "first-time desktop PC users in developing countries".
Actually as the article says this is for first time PC users in developing countries. First time pc users in developing countries probably have never seen a PC before (taking into consideration they got rather poor education) - image what happens if you give them a Linux box. Exactly, nothing - they won't be able to handle it. XPLite gives them an easy start into the PC world. I have read it got a special localized help system which is called My Support (as far as I can remember) and you do not have to configure anything yourself.
If they evolve they can always choose to get Linux or a copy of Windows Server 2003 out on the street.

Actually I would say quite the opposite would happen. If these first time users get a box with Linux on it they will probably end up learning it and will never go to M$. I think this is what M$ is afraid of so they are making this available to these countries. You can already see how capable some countries in Africa are on Linux. Just my .02

If you're poor and never seen a computer before the "nothing" you would do with a Linux box will be the same "nothing" of a windows one, of course they have different learning curves, but if youre going to teach them how to use a word processor, a spreadsheet, web surfing, mail and that stuff, the difference is not that big. And if you can teach them how to dominate Linux, they'll get much better jobs than with any ms office certificate :P
I think there's no point in comparing XP, or this XPLite with Linux. They're intended for completely different markets. Sure you can install a Linux flavour at home and use it just as you can use XP, but you would be using a minimum part of the system.

Agree with neoee's post. Many African countries are heading or have gone the Linux route mainly because of cost and that they don't want to put up with the bullshit from Microsoft. I don't think that linux is more complex than windows, everything is so well documented that if you have problems you will definitely find an anwser on the net. People are so used to windblows that the transition is difficult because they cant be assed to figure it out.
I planned to make the change to Linux, but after 2 solid days of doing nothing but screwing up my computer, I gave up! I consider myself fairly computer literate, but I couldn't get Linux working...

There are plenty of forums on the net to help with any problem you can/will encounter with any linux distro and everything is well documented. Don't give up on it, you will be glad when it all clicks.
And Microsoft will never give their source code to us, i think they're afraid we might be able to make it work properly. :Who:

I wouldn't call SUSE user friendly by any stretch of the inagination. Probably one of the most powerful distro's though.
If you want a quick lite easy workstation distro I would recommend Mandrake10.

It comes with a really nice installation system now, but it has always been the hardcore user distro of choice.

Im sure you could load some flavor of Linux on it. Maybe some of the other more Linux savvy people can recommend a distro. So far I've just been a lemming and loaded RedHat. Also you can use knoppix which is a run from CD version of Linux.

thanks neoee, but unfortunately i dont know enough about computers to decipher what you just told me.
it was brought to my attention that i'd need a lot more RAM than what is on there to run XP.
thats the route i'd like to go if at all possible.

Is this the specs for yours?
128 megabytes (MB) SDRAM standard
Intel Pentium (R) III 650 MHz processor
8 MB nVidia Riva TNT Vanta

If so i dont see why you cant run XP. It might be a bit slow but with a bit of tweeking i'm sure you could get it running at a reasonable level.
