I thought Sanderson got pretty rave reviews for taking over the Wheel of Time series and finally finished it off without all of the dragging on, so I thought he would be pretty good? I honestly have had the first book of WoT since I was in high school and it came out, but never started it... then heard it drug on...then homeboy died...and never bothered to start. Didn't seem worth the investment.

Thats the only thing I'm worried about is what you've said above, every book I've seen Sanderson write is like 500+ pages, so maybe he is more typing on the keyboard than worth the time?
Unfortunately a lot of books these days suffer from bloat but I didn't find Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy bloated.

Sanderson isn't bad, depends on the kind of writing you like, I might just be pickier with writing styles. He writes to progress the plot rather than the actual writing itself if that makes sense. Kinda like a good action movie vs an art house film?

Check out some user reviews here:

Has Sanderson's prose improved since The Way of Kings or will it still feel like rubbing sandpaper on my eyes?

An exaggeration, but I really couldn't believe how bad the writing was after hearing all the hype for the first book.
I don't understand people who complain about Sanderson's prose. It is one of his best qualities. His writing is engaging, clear, and almost never boring. I can't say that about almost any of the authors people tend to praise for their prose. It seems like the easier it is to get lost or bored, the better the prose is considered...
I found Way of Kings hard reading and nearly gave up several times - until about the last quarter of the book when everything else made sense! I am quite looking forward to this book but Im not going to rush into reading it just yet! As for his other books - Sanderson is simply one of the best Fantasy authors around at the moment - Mistborn was a masterpiece in my eyes and his new YA Reckoners series isnt so YA that adults cant enjoy it!
I just can't understand people who complain about Sanderson's prose. . . his writing is so comfortable to me, easy to slide right into. Like an old friend. Has been since the first book.

Ah, well, can't win them all!
I don't think Sanderson is bad (he's certainly a much better writer than Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind), but yeah, I've found his books pretty middling. Perfectly enjoyable and worth the money, but hardly deserving of the "new epic fantasy wunderkind" status that has been bestowed on him.

That said, I haven't read Radiance, so maybe it's incredible. After all, it does have "customs and cultures that are their own unique". What more could you want?
    1. No, he's not a better writer than Robert Jordan. He's a more straightforward writer than Robert Jordan.
Are you kidding? I read mistborn and I thought I was reading a highschool creative writing assignment. it's really really tainted me against Sanderson.
I don't think anyone ever hypes his prose. They hype his world building, magic systems, character development, the epic scale of his stories, the way he can hide secrets in plain sight, and his effective foreshadowing. And from what I've read of his books, I concur.

His prose is very workman like, its just there to deliver the story, and it can be ugly at times. But The Emperor's Soul showed that he is no mug when it comes to prose. All said, I prefer a great storyteller to a great wordsmith, and hopefully one day Sanderson can become a master of both.
Without knowing your taste I would recommend giving him a fair shot
