Toasty the ipsec passthru is a much better way to go, your wife's computer will be somewhat more secure that way. Also if your wife's work has a split-tunnel mode she won't need to be worried about going through their proxy as only traffic destined to _employer_name.com will be routed through the tunnel.

Bummer I didn't catch this thread sooner, I've been swamped with work and don't get the chance to visit MS as much as I did before.

          2. Set up router such that when laptop is used it is assigned a specific (which I assume means static) IP address.
          3. Set up IP address as a DMZ

Number 1 is no problem, but I'm at a loss when it comes to #2 and #3. Anyone have any wisdom they could share?

i bought a cheap linksys wrt54g and installed ddwrt firmware, linux based. it's amazing!
i can do anything i need, even traffic shaping

but, coming back to the topic, you might need to assign a fixed ip, unless your router's dhcp server allows you to fix ip address for certain mac addresses.

regarding security, i'm using WPA2 Personal and works perfect, performance loss is almost null on my notebook.
i have also set up the mac filtering options for wireless access

^ ^ Ha ha ha. That's great. People are going way too far with this stuff. Although, my wife is on my neighbor's network because we all know you don't let a woman on a computer and if she is, you make damn sure she's not on your network.

                  is anyone using wireless-N router/gateways?

i've just bought a new linksys (WAG325N) wireless-N gateway and usb network adapter a couple of days ago and i cant seem to get it to work properly ....

the range on the wireless-N is great but the speed i get is far worse than that of my old wireless-G set and the thing is that i've put in the exactly same settings in the new wireless-N gateway as my old wireless-G gateway

does anyone has the same gateway and encounter the same problem?

Sorry, can't help you there. My brother has that Extreme N wireless router from D-Link and it works great. I'm on the Pre-N router from Netgear and never have any problems. I've got all of our PCs, laptops and game systems connecting to it.

might be a linksys thing then ... been reading up on forums and apparently people had been having issues with WAG325N ... probably would have to call linksys up for an exchange or something

                        Re: Wireless Router Help!!

I have read people having tons of connectivity problems with N series Linksys routers.

While I would never buy another networking related brand (for the household), I would definitely recommend waiting until the Draft N is finalized.

The other thing you can do is check their website for a firmware upgrade. If you dont find a firmware upgrade, you can try installing dd-wrt (www.dd-wrt.com) - have been running it for a while now (after an initial nightmarish experience) and have no complaints with it. It may fix your problems (though I dont know if they have released N capable firmware, recommend checking their site)

not sure, it may have been finalized but a lot of the routers are being sold as " a/b/g "Draft N", I just presumed they're awaiting the stamp of approval from the IEEE
