    Re: Pat Robertson and Venezuela

The most interesting part of all of this is the reponse of the shocked
media to Robertson's comments. I mean...to think that the "benevolent"
U.S. would ever meddle in the political affairs of other sovereign nation.

The media's blatant double speak and negligent rewriting of historical
fact is astounding. How many Latin American and Middle Eastern dictators
has the CIA put into power? How many times has the U.S. government
provided financial and ideology support for tyrants who oppress their
own population while marching to the tune of the politicos in Washington.
Robertson's comments are not shocking at all. Rather, they are in lockstep
with the covert operations of the U.S. government.

It is amazing that the meda does not pay more attention to this! If a
democracy can crudely be described as a political system where the
public makes informed decisions about the fate of their institutions,
the United States, a dismal failure in this respect, is democratic
    experiment run awry.

Why aren't these incontrovertiblel facts paraded in the media? And, why
    aren't our leaders held accountable?

Pat Robertson, and others of his ilk, serve as red herrings for a political
body that is tettering on moral bankruptcy.

I actually should have been in class now following Politics in Latin America, in which I'm pretty sure the teacher will adress Venezuela & Chavez plenty. Unfortunately they've fucked up some things, so there seems to be no class today  Was looking forward to it.

They say the man still has 70% backing though, and he's pretty damn popular with the lower class people...

lower class people support him..like they say ignorance is bliss... when he campaingned for pres about 8 years ago he promised a lot of things (as most candidates do) but he actually sounded genuine. he seemed like a regular folk, just trying to better his country and steer away from traditional politics.. little did we know that he wanted to turn venezuela into cuba....

what' scrazy to me is that he tried to overturn carlos andres perez in 1991 by setting up a military coop (coupe).. now he is president...only in venezuela

                Re: Pat Robertson and Venezuela

No man, that happens in both Africa and Latin-America, don't be ashamed for it...most coup-plotters don't do that out of the blue, they do have a legitimate basis for that among part of the people (legitimate being support from the people they represent, or pretend to represent). So when they try to obtain the ultimate power tool (State/Presidency) thru politics, they can usually count on quite some support in the elections...Sick mechanisms, and all too often very cunningly exploited.

"I risked my life for you people, now support me in the elections otherwise hardship will never come to and end".

                  Re: Pat Robertson and Venezuela

I'm sorry, but it is difficult for me to feel sorry for those in the middle and
upper-middle class that have lost status / property because of Chavez's
socialist movement. In many ways, property rights are merely a
mechanism for financial inheritance and fucntion to perpetuate a system
which skews the distribution of wealth.

I know it is pretty easy for me to say all of this seeing as I live a
middle-class life style in the U.S. But, I would be more than happy
to give up much of what I own in order to shift some of that
material wealth to those who are not even able to secure
                  daily subsistence.

Property rights are a privilege not an unforsakable right. People
can't find steady employment. They don't have health care, housing,
or adequate food. But, the middle class complains because they can
no longer afford that nice 15,000 square foot house. PLEASE!!!
Let's have a little perspective here.

I have no doubt that Chavez has not kept all of his promises. Indeed, it
is difficult for any leader, revolutionary or otherwise, to keep all of their
idealistic campaign promises because, once they are in office, they
discover how massive the government bureaucracy is and how difficult
it is to move the enormous ship of state in a practical manner, while
maintaining the decisive support of the people. The question is...
are Chavez's ideas commendable and do they represent a
political movement in the right direction? From what I have read and
seen, I would have to say that this appears to be the case. But then
again, I don't live in Venezuela.
