I used to be a heavy flirter...not much anymore these days. However, I still find myself using my flirtiness to my benefit in certain situations and I will probably continue to do so.

There is a difference between lightly flirting and flirting to get a number, hang out with someone without your partner knowing, etc.

It's basicly an ego thing imo. Flirting is a way of seeking attention and confirmation of your sex appeal. You know, finding an answer to the question "Do I still have it?" "Am I still hot?"

Flirting when you're single is a natural thing. Kinda testing the waters of interest... playing a little cat and mouse. There's nothing cool about flirting with someone when you're in a "committed" relationship... period. It's OK if someone who's single flirts with you but if you return it then obviously you're not serious about your relationship... my two cents.

Ahh i think it depends on what age you are and how far your into a relationship..Its hard walking into a club/pub and not throwing the odd smile at a girl when shes walking by. I guess i dont have much faith in women anymore.. In 2006 people have less respect for relationships and that goes for women as much as blokes . A woman who flirts with you regardless if she has a boyfriend can be persuaded easily and i guess its all part of the chase.

I think the obvious reason for flirting have been covered, but I think in the case of men especially it can fufill the 'spread the seed mentality'. E.g, u work with someone good looking and try and flirt with her so if she flirts back its almost like u can think 'well i could if I wanted' (v crude description I know). Just make sure that is where it stops!
