idea is that you're pre-screened, so security goes faster. Here's what they have in store:

1. The platform you stand on contains a shoe scanner that, within several weeks ? when the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approves it ? will scan your shoes looking for dangerous material. This will allow most Clear members to leave their shoes on.

2. The kiosk contains a device called a trace detector that performs a separate check for explosives residue. TSA is currently testing this as well. If approved ? and we hope it will be in the next few weeks, if not sooner ? it should allow you to leave your suit jackets or other outer garments on.

3. We are also evaluating additional equipment to enhance the X-Ray process used for your carry-on bags, so that you can leave your laptop in your bag and possibly carry liquids without further inspection. Unlike the shoe scanner and trace detector, this improvement is at least six to nine months away, maybe more.

Cost is $100 per year. Would be well worth it if you travel a lot except that none of these things are actually implemented or approved yet, and -- and this is the kicker -- you still have to go through the TSA screening process, too. According to the web site:

Will I still have to go through the x-ray?
Yes. Once you have completed Clear verification, you will proceed to TSA screening, including a walk-through metal detector and x-ray screening of your carry-on luggage.

What the hell is the point? Seems like it's just adding a step to the process to me. Whoopdefreakingdoo. Complete waste of money IMO.

^^right, but the slowest part of the process is going through TSA -- and if you still have to do that anyway, I'm not sure what benefit this could provide...

saw this at the airport in Indy not too long ago. It seems like a great idea, but if you must continue dealing with the TSA... what's the point? And from my service today, the slowest part came not from TSA, but from the airlines itself. (note: trying to avoid USAirways for a long time, if possible). And I fly once-a-month. if not more. I think a more efficient way to handle this issues, particularly for businesspersons who are constantly traveling, is to have time-shares for flights via smaller private regional airlines. cuts down on waiting time and cuts out the TSA altogether.

Sounds like a useless thing, only meant to get some more money out of you. Not that I need that shit when travelling to Africa anyway, I once took my utensil knife with me in my hand-luggage after it got scanned. They probably had no idea what such a thing looks like, lol...

Alright. I'll add my two cents to this thread and watch out, I'm actually being serious. (As if I'm not always.) They started advertising this in various airports around June of last year and the first ones were implemented in September. They've had serious problems with the equipment and it's actually caused delays for people. It's true about the fact that after you go through one of these, you still have to go through the TSA inspections so it really doesn't make any sense at all because you still have to take off your belongings in order to go through the scanners. I'd say I fly anywhere from five to fifteen times in a week and honestly, I don't have a reason to go through this crap even though my employer would pay for this. This isn't gonna last and although it had good intentions, they obviously had the wrong people actually trying to implement this without proper follow through. Morons, I tell ya.
