    Africa goes to Ryan Dent

Ryan has in his 7 years in the scene, quickly become one of the most influential DJ's in the country. He has won numerous awards (2001: SA City Life DJ & UDMA Deep House DJ & Overall Best DJ, SL Magazine DJ of 2001, SA City Life DJ of 2000, Epic Magazine DJ of 1999), the unqualified respect of his peers, and adulation on any dance floor, prove that Ryan is a DJ that is taking our local beat to the next level.

As a producer and A&R. on his own South African label, Platform Records he is forcing the international dance scene to sit up and take notice of the Cape Town sound. His production success with "Haya" reaching No. 10 on 5FM Top40 is the tip of the iceberg, with vinyl releases on Dutch label Extrema with "Purple Ohm", and "Need It" & "FunkDust" released on Belgium label StartStop Records. His first mixed CD released in early 2001 "Deeper Sound of Ryan Dent" has reached sales of over 10 000 copies.

Ryan started mixing in early 1994 on inventive set-ups using twin amps and an array of music, he has owned his own nightclub, played live to 7500, opened for Carl Cox & Deep Dish (Pharcyde) & been resident at every house club in Cape Town from G-Spot to Sutra.

His raw energy & talent has taken him Europe every year since 2001 to play alongside house legends Gene Farris, Derrick Carter & Tom Middleton from London to Paris to Amsterdam to Barcelona to Eindhoven!

Given complete creative control to exhibit his full stratospheric deck dexterity, there is no telling where this sonic alchemist might take you. Open wide! This dentist operates on your behalf.

It's good to hear y'alls mentioning Steve Porter and Chris Fortier. I really like Steve's productions, and live he's super good at building a set. I found Chris a little scattered behind the decks, he's working hard, but there's not such a flow. Although he does keep those high-hat claps on the 2 and 4, like a good bedrock/balance boy.

Re: Best DJ from Each Continent

Dave Seaman and Adam Freeland are both British...

Satoshi Tomiie and Deep Dish have been in the US (and Pappa in the UK) so long that it's difficult to put them into other categories...

For Africa there must be a couple of DJs from Cape Town in the reckoning ? Dave Seaman did a GU mix from there so must be a couple of decent DJs...

Kasey Taylor is definitely up there for Australia and Sean Quinn used to rock, although I think he went a bit 'banging'...

I saw one of the residents at Zouk in Singapore about six years ago who played one of the best sets I've ever heard so there's a few of them in the reckoning (especially with the new Zouk in Kuala Lumpur)...

And is America one continent or two? I'd always thought it was two (North and South) until I had a conversation with an Argentinian girl earlier this year who spent a year in New York and was horrified that they were taught at school it was two continents when she was taught it was just one continent...

Where does that put Central America she said? And I sort of mumbled it was probably North as the line was probably drawn at the Panama Canal.

I always thought I was good at geography... Anyway, off-topic

oops, I guess I thought that cause he's always in Melbourne. I talked to the guy once, guess I should be able to tell between Australian and English accents but it was loud in the club

when I chose for North America I was only thinking of Canada, cause I have to agree that DEEP DISH rules as far as the US goes.

So who do you think the "best" DJ is from each continent? (excluding Antarctica and the Arctic ... but if you know any DJ's from there feel free to list them.

    This is my opinion:

    Europe: Sasha
    South America: Hernan Cattaneo
    North America: Luke Fair
    Asia: Satoshi Tomiie
    Australia: Anthony Pappa
    Africa: ???

Whatever the case, Europe definitely seems to produce the largest amounts of talent. North America is an amazing place to party but our talent pool seems a little stale in comparison.

wow your choices were spot on to what I would have chose, except I would have chose Dave Seaman for Australia.
North America is still relatively new to the scence compared to Europe, mainly the UK, but I think we are starting to get some good talent like Luke and Max Graham.

Adam Freeland is only a recent arrival to our shores... bah.

If I was going to nominate the best DJ in the Australasia region, I'd put my money on Robbie Lowe or Kasey Taylor.

Speaking of those guys... Robbie Lowe is soon to be a Proton Featured Artist, and Kasey Taylor's just started his own Proton show with Chris Meehan called Vapourized.

As for Pappa.. nah, he can't qualify any more. Same with Cass. Kid Kenobi? Definitely Australia's most popular, but there's plenty of others who are 'better' - like Phil K, for example. If you want to go for the popular vote, Mark Dynamix is a much better technical DJ and has much better music taste on top of that.

(And yes - Infusion definitely are the best in the country for a live act and Nubreed as a runner up.)

    Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
