Oh. My. God. James absolutely obliterated the island tonight. The last time there was so much destruction, Obi Wan Kenobi had to take a seat on the Falcon after the Death Star said "hi and bye" to Leia's homeworld.
I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
Thanks for that feather. I never really thought how venture capital worked before.
Such a shame though

Is VC being involved that big a deal that it would deter people from joining? What's the real risk? That member's personal information will be/has been sold, therefore, it's not worth joining? Create an email address and don't use your whole name, problem solved or not?
Understandably, people who create & maintain these sites have to pay their bills like everyone else and rarely is a far-reaching social media site going to be as pure as that manifesto described, although it's a lofty idea I like, it's pretty unrealistic in our world that is commerce driven. Even a site such as this that accepts donations, there is embedded business being generated if only through music being promoted, concert tickets sold, etc. I have no problem with being a consumer & paying artists of all kinds. If a group of inventors, programmers, etc. has to go to VC to fund their efforts, why do we have a problem with that?
I'm just asking because I don't know the answers.
So the guy who said goodbye to Ello is creating "Ind.ie" has anyone checked his out? https://ind.ie/ His team of 5 is asking for public funding.
I just don't get the "be afraid, be very afraid" mentality of corporations marketing to people; they've been doing that all our lives even when our children go to the movies; they create jobs, people earn livings, create wealth, so? As long as they don't intrude too much or are annoying, I don't mind all that much. Am I missing something?
They could in theory payback or buyback what they own..$435k is nothing in the tech world. Also, who starts a business without the intention of making $ ?

Yes, you are missing a lot. The internet has changed the world. It is a wonderful thing, I love it, but it really can't be controlled. It has enormous capacity to do evil, for want of a better term.
In this case they have absolutely no chance of fulfilling their manifesto even slightly. It is not a matter of being prepared to pay for things, here it is YOU that is being sold. I would be quite happy to pay for this if it's manifesto was doable, but they have already sold out. They can't give you what they offer. Inventors , programmers etc we know are aiming for commercial benefits so venture capital works well there.
If you look closely at any of the so called social media benefits they aren't really. Major example is the Arab Spring, we couldn't actually say that turned out well could we ??? Social media has become a great recruiting ground for ISIS for example. People say oh ,it's great for sharing pics etc of the family. Well you have to be very careful of the picks you share of your kids because the child pornographers are thriving. Spell check doesn't work on pornographers Denial at all
So much more that could be said about this. All the information is out there all you have to do what feather did and look for it. Look well before you leap.

^^ thanks for the thoughtful response Didi ... you sound a lot like my husband in these matters.
The things you brought up aren't really on my radar as I make a concentrated effort to keep my life as positive-in-thought as possible (have had to out of necessity) but very valid points. Just about anything can be used for good & bad; horrible it's aiding terrorists. I saw an article the other day that reported little girls named "Isis" are now being bullied in schools, how stupid is that? sheesh
Many of my pics I'll post & only leave up for 1 day or so, then off they go to 'my friends only' because it does freak me out a bit to have them out for public view, just doesn't feel right.
So true, there really is no controlling it. These manifestos are just another marketing ploy.
I suppose because they've 'sold out,' there's really no guarantee whether they will adhere to their manifesto. I don't have much of a problem with data mining in exchange for free service like Gmail or Google search, but there's no stopping Ello if they start running ads like Facebook because they have to answer to investors.

The development team of Ello signed the deal Ello's developers have agreed to make Ello a Public Benefit Corporation - which means the site cannot, for monetary gain, do the following:
Sell user-specific data to a third party;
Enter into an agreement to display paid advertising on behalf of a third party; and
In the event of an acquisition or asset transfer, the Company shall require any acquiring entity to adopt these requirements with respect to the operation of Ello or its assets.
ELLO, PBC
A Better Way
October 20, 2014
Ello is a simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network.
There has been some speculation in the press since our launch eleven weeks ago
that Ello will someday be forced to allow paid advertising on its network.
We understand some of this cynicism: with the Internet turning into one giant
billboard, and with virtually all social networks relying on advertising to
support themselves, it can be hard to imagine that there can be a better way.
But 2014 is not 2004, and the world has changed.
Ello’s explosive growth over the last few months proves that there is a hunger
to connect with friends and see beautiful things — without being manipulated
by ad salesmen, boosted posts, and computer algorithms that don’t always have
our best interests at heart. On an ad-driven social network, the advertiser is
the customer and you’re the product that’s bought and sold.
To assure in the strongest possible way that Ello stays focused on its mission
to be a different kind of social network, Ello has converted to a State of
Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).
A PBC is a special for-profit company in the USA that operates to produce a
benefit for society as a whole. As a PBC, Ello is legally obligated to take
its impact on society into account in every decision it makes.
Ello’s PBC’s charter states that Ello shall not for pecuniary gain:
1. Sell user-specific data to a third party;
2. Enter into an agreement to display paid advertising on behalf of a
third party; and
3. In the event of an acquisition or asset transfer, the Company shall
require any acquiring entity to adopt these requirements with respect
to the operation of Ello or its assets.
In other words, Ello exists for your benefit, not just to make money.
Simple, beautiful, and ad-free.
There is a better way.
Enjoy Ello!
We, as founders and investors in Ello, vow to support Ello’s mission and to
abide by the terms of the Ello Charter as stated above.

Interesting, but why do we need social media anyway. ?? And they still haven't covered how they are going to make a profit. Sausage sizzle anyone ??
They really do need to be more specific.
