Now here is a photo that shows that Sasha has not simply went and made the complete switch to just using his powerbook.
Cool photo too i might add.
I agree, cool pic Jeffrey. Can you elaborate a little on your comment and what Sasha usually uses as tools to play a gig? I'm assuming the Powerbook is a laptop style Apple computer? How would one be able to run a gig on essentially a laptop alone and still have some dignity? As you can tell, i know NOTHING about DJing. I'm just the end listener but my curiosity gets the best of me at times.

Go do some research, read the interviews, and find out what Sasha is using the G5 Imac to control, and what he is controlling it with... take note of what he specifically required there be control over and such.
I think you just said something about sasha using a computer to spin, and how can he have any dignity... I'm going to request that you rephrase or clarify what you mean by that. I'd like to know what you know of sasha (and as you said u know nothing of spinning) and then feel comfortable enough to bring dignity up... I am gonna wait to see if I misunderstood, but if I didn't... this CUNT will be infected with hostility
I didn't mean any disrespect toward Sasha or any DJ. In fact, i'm a huge fan of Sashas. I'm also not insinuating that using a laptop computer as an aid to DJing is bad. Its just that over at the GU board it seems DJs slag on one another for using a computer only to do their gigs with, which is why I asked in the first place. I'm sorry if you were offended by it Mike, again I didn't mean anything by it. I'm just curious about his setup that so many people give him shyte about. Can you elaborate on the "G5 Imac" and his set up a little? How does it work? What advantages does it have over other DJ tools? Again, i'm just curious mate, no need to be "infected with hostility".

Super! I decided to wait before assuming, woohoo! A G5 Imac is a desktop computer, but essentially the monitor (his is a 17") contains the entire system and a keyboard and mouse would be plugged in normally. Instead, Sasha helped design and "imagineer" a controller to use for ableton Live, the software he uses. This one should really help, its all about your quandry.
As for the GU board superiority... all I can say, people who insult and demean someone for playing electronic music from a computer, and using technology to change and play with "techno", are people who would find any other way to sound cooler and smarter, and all about "the scene". Sasha doesnt need to prove he can play without the computer, so its not at all a matter of covering up for sucking or something.
Always go back and ask yourself and others... isn't it about the music, and loving the music and making the music in as many new ways as possible, and if u dont like a DJ, or they "suck", nobody is holding a gun to your head to dance to that beat. Go find what you like or want, THERE AINT nuthin worse than those who stick around just to be bummers around everyone's good time...
....if they knew how to have a good time, they wouldn't sit around wasting time, they would be wherever that good time is, otherwise they can SHUT THE FUCK UP! lol
Thank you for your honest questions and ideas, I would just be careful using the word dignity lightly... dignity (true deep down dignity) is essentially ..Am I a good person worthy of living and worthy of love, happiness, compassion.... the dignity comes from not denying anyone else those things, and being honest about who you are to yourself and others. (last example) Sasha isnt trying to "trick us" or pull a fast one and hope that nobody comments on the computer... he is well aware and freely discusses what and why he is doing this, accepting whatever comes with it (that is dignified) (criticizing the method without giving it the opportunity to prove itself musically and bring something new to the table.
Oh boy, spent on music and art, here come the long posts again for a few days......

Good post. Thanks for not flaming me. I meant well and apparently I couldn't express that properly (perhaps by way of poor choice of words) in the original post.
Thanks for the link. I'll try and read it on lunch

You hit the nail on the head my friend. I have noticed that there wicked case of "Elitist superiority" complex going about that forum. Sometimes I find it offending, other times I find it downright funny (sometimes at the poster's expense ).
I've seen Sasha play at Twilo back ~97-98 during the days of the dark, perhaps "now-thats-what-I-call-Prog!" (lol! just having a laugh mate! please don't flame me) era and have watched him tear up the decks so I know he is more than capable of it. I loved AirdrawnDagger (breath of fresh air IMO) and Involver, which consequently got quite the slagging on the GU forum. Hence I will always be a fan of his always-amazing work. That is pretty interesting how he integrated a specific controller into the Ableton Live software.

You know, its funny you bring this up because during the past few years the music scene has changed quite a bit. I know its always changing but it just seems we were sort of stuck in a Prog rut a few years ago with some of GU series and what the DJs were spinning. Then we got out of it and all this new music evolved which I'm quite thankful for. The only thing I find confusing is the classifying of genres or styles. Progressive, Breaks, House, Trance, Acid, Tribal, etc. For the most part I usually have a hard time making a distinction between them (with the exception of Trance and Tribal). I've witnessed people argue over trying to match a song with a genre and I often wonder: Who cares? If it sounds good, why go to all the trouble to classify something like that? I know it may sound odd to some of you, perhaps even trivial but for me if it sounds good, then it all sounds the same. Part of that isn't laziness on my part, its more the fact that I do honestly have a hard time making a distinction between some of the stuff.

Again, poor word usage on my part. I apologize. I know Sasha isn't trying to pull a fast one on us and will continue to enjoy good music that he puts out.
Yay! Agreement is fun.... the fact that I am watching a BAD coming out of the closet movie starring someone I went to college with for theatre is making me nasueas....
Mike you cleared the whole "computer as source" thing right up. Though I do know at the beginning he used to use a laptop before that G5 iMAC came out.
I doubt seriously that the 1000's were there as a backup. Those computers hardly ever need a backup. That's why when people talk about MAC's they almost never talk about them crashing.

This kind of thing always makes me think of people like JZ (james zabiela) when he was talking about a definition of prog. He basically called it a way of being rather than a style of music. It's about taking things that you like and making them fit into a set. It doesn't matter if it's a derrick carter track mixed with a tim skinner track. As long as it sounds good...that is prog.
I always call a local dj friend of mine who goes by the name of Quantum a Progressive dj, even though he plays regular house and even sometimes disco house, but in that same set he'll drop green velvet- flash (DT remix) and it'll end up really dark sounding for the set. I think it's really all about how one builds the set and how they think of themselves.
Hell Digweed is still considered a prog dj and his fabric cd is all tech house.

Well, the mac crashed on this night, and has at least a few times during his residency nights.
i just got homefrom sasha and james. ouch, ouch, great night, i sleep then show n tell, met up with mmglobal, great guy, great friends, wonderful night despite horrible crowd for the most part.

I talked to him about his Mac and that's when he told me the sound card crashed in S.F... Maybe he'll stop using an Imac or upgrade his soundcard, or he can stick to the Powerrbook G4 like he did in L.A.
great pic of sasha mate. How was the sound system? Sasha and Digweed is like bread and butter....I miss them. When are then coming to the states?
Music...it?s one of the greatest gifts from God that embraces our sorrows, relieves our worries, strengthens our mind, encourages our soul, builds our character, intrigues our wisdom and challenges our experiences. Music is a way of life.
