Some of the Balance releases where OK, Sean Quinn & Phil K where probaby the best. Jimmy Van M's was a big disappointment. If Nick Warren had done a GU at the same time he did a Balance it would have contained the same tracks. The only difference would have been the packagingComment

The internet, laptop production, moving away from vinyl and file sharing killed things off, in that you couldn't keep any sort of exclusivity or a sense that the music is new unless you make it all yourself. In the 90's the only way to hear the music being played was in the clubs or via the Essential Mix. Also licensing issues are now a big thing, I bet a lot of labels like to keep things in house or ask for prohibative fees.I don't think it was the brand that fucked up, it was more to do with the way that music went. The DJ can only play the music that is in front of them and everything stagnated in 2001/02. There will never be another Northern Exposure, GU or mix CD in my lifetime that can superseded them releases from the 90's. The scene moved at such a pace that it suffocated itself in the process. The internet played a big part in that, just like Soundcloud played a part in killing many music forums. That dark plink plonk chugging sound is never going to come close to Liquid Cool or Julika.
Going to a Sasha or Digweed gig now is like going to a Rolling Stones gig, they're remembered for what they where, not what they are. people will go and tell you the night was amazing but I don't think it will be comparable to what they did in the 90s
It was the music that killed GU off, nothing to do with MOS
But that 96 - 2001 sound has gone, the producers have moved on, just look at Deep Dish. That meshing of NYC, British, Dutch, German, French and Italian sounds isn't there any more ... plus music is now definately global and made on PCs not in studios.
Diggers 2010 EM had that GU thing (inspired by his set at Sankeys) and would have made a great double CD : if he could have got his last fabric set into a double release it would have rivalled his GUs.
Not sure if the music would have sounded as big. Sasha's recent ibiza interview was interesting, he plays of MP3s because WAVs are too big ... a long way from vinyl.sigpicSimonR

I really think soundcloud has augmented music forums. There still needs to be forums where people can discuss music and get together from across the globe ( as well as nonsense). You wouldn't do that on Soundcloud. But Soundcloud does give forum members (and everyone else) instant access to streaming their favorite artists music. Soundcloud has provided a huge amount of access to all the genres of EDM though, so forums that stick to only one particular type of EDM might be at a loss.Last edited by floridaorange; August 26, 2012, 05:08:32 PM.

as far as I know they did to bankrupt and the DJs who wanted to release on it paid for it themselves, not sure if this is still happening. The brand really died off, I remember the GU25 party for Deep Dish in Toronto, that was legendary, nothing really amazing has happened since with them...nothing like the old ones!Comment

And this is where you are going wrong. The average person at one of them gigs doesn't care about the Underground. You are assuming that the Underground is something people aspire to, it isn't. And as for young people not knowing any better. Young people go out and purchase more music than people in their 30's. When I was in my teens I was doing over 150 gigs a year and buying records on a weekly basis I didn’t need people older than me to guide or tell me what was good or not. Age just isn’t an excuse. I wasn't governed by trends or fashions. Being underground doesn’t mean it’s good.Not if you are in your early 20's. You wouldn't know any different. You would however notice that Sasha and/or Digweed weren't playing dubstep, or the music you hear on the radio (at least here). So for someone of that age/experience you would feel like you were at an underground music night. At least in the US you would.
Do you reckon if you played some teen one of Sasha’s old mix CD’s they would be completely blown away and suddenly start trekking up and down the country going to Sasha gigs? It’s possible but not very likely. The reality is most people like music that is melodic emotional and uplifting. Sasha & Digweed used to play that sort of music in the 90’s, they don’t anymore.
It also goes the other way too. If I was to play Digweed LA CD to people a generation above me, do you think they would be blown away? No they would most likely think it was a pile of shite and that my taste was terrible. I can understand that CD would have no appeal to some people but I don’t feel the need to push it on people.
You only have to look at that BE-AT TV video from yesterday Sasha certainly wasn’t encapsulating the crowd. A crowd almost entirely made up of people in their very late 20’s & 30’s. I mean how many people here on this forum are under 27?Comment

by the way, what happened to Nubreed.? the sultan release was top notch. I was hoping they would start putting out some decent dj's unlike the other DJ series that was a bit wank.

Based on the last two Transitions guest mixes people like Max Cooper and Kollektiv Turmstrasse could be given a go, but they wouldn't sell.
I'd be interested to see what Villalobos could do, but then he'd be very much against a branded release.sigpicSimonR

completely forgot the essence of this series, the music changes,
We are old, kids control the world, and all that shit. I know,
but they did nothing to maintain quality, calling Carl Cox, Felix "the cat",
etc., just to raise money, or I dont know for what
and then stopped, even of all the series. '
Hopefully, they can come back with something more interesting than marketing.Comment

They are already dead the last GU release was over 2 years ago now and that didn't really set the world on fire. I would be surprised if Adam Freeland, FDHC and Layo & Bushwacka sold more CD's put together than the last Nick Warren GU mix. If you put toether the last 2 Transitions CD's Digweed released and repackaged them as GU 40 would the have saved the brand? No!
