04. Angelo Mele - Room After (Work It EP) [Affin Records | AFFIN 137]
In just five years, Joachim Spieth’s Affin label has not only clocked up over 100 releases, but so too has it established itself as a go-to label for fans of quality House and Techno. Sometimes the sounds are peak time, others they are more suited to the early warm up hours, but always are they fresh offerings from a wide range of contemporary talents. Importantly, the support that Affin garners comes from respected DJs and producers around the world, ensuring it’s not a hype label but one built on consistently quality output.
Artists including Deepchild, Little Fritter, Roberto and many more have contributed to the labels great back catalogue from their bases all over Europe, Asia and America. Affin remixes have always been quality affairs as well, calling on the likes of Brendon Moeller, Samuel L Session and many more to offer their take on the originals. 2012 was one of the imprint’s finest years to date, releasing 6 vinyl Eps and picking up chartings from influential spinners like Juan Atkins, Martin L Gore, Kevin Sanderson, Josh Wink and Stacey Pullen, amongst others.
Over the years there have been a number of well received and specially curated compilations, all of which have showcased the inventive Affin sound bringing new fans with each instalment. Alongside the musical output, there have been outstanding Affin label parties in clubs such as Hive in Zurich, Swizerland and Tresor in Berlin, Germany, taking the Affin sound out of the studio and into the clubs.
The latest development at this diverse electronic label has been to start pressing up gorgeous vinyl releases. Digital releases will continue, but this way wax lovers wont get left out.

07. Daniel Dexter - Papillon [Poker Flat Recordings | PFRLP33]
Daniel Dexter: "You may kill me, but you can never kill vinyl & CD". We just could not resist to quote Daniel Dexter at this point. Enchanting! Berlin-based producer and DJ has freshly released his debut album on Poker Flat and he is clearly overwhelmed with FOCUS ON love! This comes from the pure vinyl heart and you killers and lovers out there will be thrilled to hear that his double vinyl is available now - find your righteous sound
Daniel Dexter’s reputation as party starter extraordinaire keeps on growing – a result of his punishing touring schedule and consistently exceptional output of some of Europe’s top electronic labels. But it’s fair to say that Berlin based Dexter’s most rewarding and boundary-pushing work so far has been courtesy of Poker Flat Recordings – which makes this edition of the Hamburg imprint’s Focus On series very timely.
Focus On Daniel Dexter joins the already illustrious company of previous releases that featured Argy and Guido Schneider, and is set to bring Dexter’s unique brand of dancefloor mayhem to yet more ears. Having spent 2012 touring the world and ripping up dancefloors in every way imaginable, this release brings into sharp focus the force of nature that is Daniel Dexter.
The release draws together some key releases and distinct high points of his sound over the last few years, as well as giving us some very exciting glimpses of what’s in store in the future – scattered throughout this weighty release are numerous unreleased and exclusive cuts set to detonate dancefloors throughout 2013. The exclusive tracks are available on the vinyl release, while digital customers can pick up all 13 unmixed tracks. What’s more, the album is also being released on CD as an exclusive mix made by Dexter himself, showcasing not only his expertly crafted tracks but his unique and highly sought after mixing skills – not to be missed!
The journey starts with ‘The Other Day’ – Dexter’s emotional mood setter sounding as good as ever – a true slice of atmospheric dance music as you’ll hear. The album also makes sure to stop by some other Dexter-defining moments, including ‘No House for Old Men’ from 2011, and a trio of stunning releases on Poker Flat from 2012 – ‘Sirens’, ‘Storm’ and ‘Murder’. Each was a master class in dynamics and production savvy, referencing classic sounds but never being overawed by them. Dexter’s astounding remix for Zombie Disco Squad’s ‘Righteous Sound’ on Made to Play is another case in point- tight, punchy, and filled with a menace and attitude that is all Dexter.
Dexter’s skills for balancing the needs of dance-floors to the more cerebral needs of the home listeners is clear - and nowhere more so than on the new and exclusive tracks on this release. ‘Birds’ has a lightness of touch that makes it perfect for very early or very late in any set. ‘Night Away’ is more upfront but maintains a jazzy undertone and boasts a smouldering vocal from Geraldine Roth – and also comes with a handy dub version for the DJs. ‘Raw Land’ is a firing late night house monster, deep and trippy and sure to turn a few floors inside out when played at the right moment.
‘Papillon’ builds dramatically, utilises its few elements to create a wicked groove reminiscent of classic period Carl Craig, while ‘Why So Serious?’ adds another dimension of edginess to the proceedings.
‘In To The Wild’ further references Dexter’s debt to Detroit, but transcends the sum of its parts to create a lush and emotive deep bomb. Rounding off the album is Dexter’s upcoming remix of Gender Bombs ‘Danube’- a perfect way to close this epic journey- sitting somewhere between trip hop and deep house, this track showcases Dexter’s extraordinary diversity and sure touch for emotional dance music.

08. Jakkin Rabbit - How Deep (Zion EP) [No. 19 Music | NO19033]
Jonny White’s No.19 Music teams up with UK duo Jakkin’ Rabbit for some delectable House music featuring vocals from the legendary Robert Owens and the act’s own Danny Kane…
Birmingham’s Danny Kane is an accomplished producer and multi instrumentalist who has worked with the likes of UB40, Chaka Khan, Bobby Womack & Shara Nelson but now as part of Jakkin’ Rabbit with partner Marc Spence it seems he is on the brink of something big himself. Back in 2011 their track ‘Blame’ featured on the ‘Hot Waves 2’ compilation and was one of the highlights of the album, with its twisted and risqué video creating quite a stir on release, but it has been joining up with Jonny White and No.19 Music that has truly brought this talented pair to the fore. Their appearance on Art Department’s recent ‘Social Experiment 003’ gave Jakkin’ Rabbit a solid seal of approval with their collaborative track featuring Robert Owens a definite highlight in the mix. Now the pair are stepping up for their debut artist single, as No.19 welcome them to their already impressive stable of artists.
The ‘Zion EP’ kicks off with the wonderful ‘Mothership’ a record that once again features the timeless vocals of House music legend Robert Owens. Building on tight drum programming, subtle melodic elements and warm, bubbling bass Kane & Spence create a rock solid House groove that provides the perfect soundbed for Owens sultry vocal performance. Next up we have ‘The Truth’, a brilliantly intense old school 303-fuelled slice of House music featuring vocals from Jakkin Rabbit’s own Danny Kane. Chicago inspired drums, squelching acid and Kane’s incantation of “You can’t tell me nothing” is all that’s needed for an instant Acid House anthem, quality stuff. To complete the package Jakkin’ Rabbit serve up the outstanding ‘How Deep’, a record that answers its own question with its deep House credentials on show courtesy of some sublime filtered stabs, shuffling drums and understated vocal parts.
With a new single from No.19 Music you know it’s going to be something special and this debut single from Jakkin’ Rabbit certainly does not disappoint.
[data transmission review]
Since the first Fingers releases in the mid-80s, I’ve maintained that Robert Owens is not only the greatest voice to come out of house but all of soul music with his spine-tingling impassioned dramas. Apart from sporadic solo releases, Robert has seemed destined to guest status when there’s obviously a classic album just waiting to be made.
Maybe he’s found the foil in Birmingham’s Danny Kane and Marc Spence, aka Jakkin’ Rabbit, whose starkly lustrous groove on ‘Mothership’ provides a perfect vehicle for Robert to uncurl his quirky hooks and soulful declarations, plus a very cool George Clinton-style space monologue.
The Rabbit also get to bounce around on the two contagious collisions between acid house primitivism and deep, throbbing house to be found on the 303-flecked ‘The Truth’ and monstrous electronic funk hoedown of ‘How Deep’, proving themselves a formidable studio force. So how about that album chaps?

09. [a]pendics.shuffle Ft. Blakkat - Heavy Burdens High (Velvet Elvis' Late Night Loco Mix) [Adjunct | ADJUNCT25]

10. Zoo Brazil - Cut Boots [Sci+Tec Digital Audio | TEC071]
Having provided a platform for many of our new artists to showcase their talents, for TEC071 we welcome back a producer who has been a key member of our label family since his 2008 release, 'Crysis'. Since then, Sweden's John Andersson aka Zoo Brazil has also featured on the label with his 2010 single 'Match' and his mighty 2011 release 'Slob'. A track that, backed by its super strong Nick Curly remix, went on to feature in charts throughout the year.
In his typical no-holds-barred fashion, Zoo Brazil's latest SCI+TEC smash, 'Cut Boots', hits hard and heavy with its stomping tribal beats. Its electronic march is enhanced and graced by the beauty of its youthful vocals. On the remix we welcome back Canadian duo The Junkies who, fresh from releases on Rawthentic and Octopus, take 'Cut Boots' into deeper and darker territory with a perfect 4am soundtrack.
