Sirius, XM Win Approval to Distribute Satellite Radio in Canada
June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Canada approved satellite-radio applications from Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., allowing the top two U.S. broadcasters to offer services in the country.
XM's Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. and Sirius Canada Inc. will get seven-year licenses if they add eight Canadian channels that account for 10 percent of the stations offered, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said today at a ruling in Gatineau, Quebec.
The companies had promised to add five Canadian channels, three in English and two in French, and help fund programs to develop Canadian artists.
Canadian broadcaster CHUM Ltd. also won approval to start a made-in-Canada subscription service using digital radio technology.
