Yes, but neither of those ways is European or American because neither of those systems put the year first. For chronological ordering YYYY/MM/DD is definitely better, but the European system is more consistent because it works from least significant to most significant in order instead of jumping around like the American system. Who in europe puts the year first tho? today is 30/06/2004, as in 30th day of the 6th month of the 2004th year, one follows the other quite nicely!
Oh and the metric system replaced the imperial one in the Uk, it's a natural progression.. the rest of the world will catch up soon
