Re: So what's with all the electro?

I dont want to keep repeating the obvious, but i am fed up of people putting down everything that isnt prog just because it isnt prog and then calling all of it electro. if you dont like it or not used to it, so be it, dont need to make meetings about it.

I for one dont listen to prog. The old stuff used to be good and i would love listening to it. All the new stuff is so bland it is annoying. I would take techno, electro, tech-house, acid over prog any day of the week. Bring me a set by Nic Fanciulli or some King Unique, or some Richie Hawtin or even some Slam, M.A.N.D.Y., DJ T, Booka Shade, Adam Beyer, Ivan Smagghe, Damian Lazarus and Craig Richards and Lee Burridge and the likes and i will be eternally greatful.

I love that type of music. I also like hip-hop and breaks. But i also respect all the other types of music and the people that listen to them. Anyways i am finished rambling on. Sundays are real hard for me
      Peace

If you love music you should be able to enjoy the cream of any music genre , though you tend to like even the mediecore of your favourite styles . I do find electro minimal and the other genres sound great at home but i couldn't ever imagine "getting into" them in a club . Just because something dosn't float my boat it dosn't make it bad music . Different strokes for different folks a different beat for different feet

Re: So what's with all the electro?

It almost seems that this thread has turned into a "Prog" is evil thread. I don't understand why it's so taboo to like "Progressive" music. Why is it once something becomes popular that people have to find something else because they want to "reinvent" themselves, so they're "undergound." Stop trying to impress your elitist peers! Just listen to what you like. Who gives a shit what other people think about the music you listen to. I like Progressive. I like Electro. I like other genres as well and I'm always working on expanding my horizons. My fallback though is Progressive. It's what keeps me interested the most. I like what Dave Seaman has to say about Progressive music in a Higher Frequency interview:

HRFQ : We heard that there were some more eclectic influences, especially on your CD, some funk and rock, what can we expect?
Dave : well it's all progressive house to me really, I find it more and more difficult to explain genres these days, all the lines have become so blurred I think. I mean yeah, my CD starts off a bit housy, it's got some sort of TwentyTwenty Vision stuff on it, some more, Silicon Soul is on it, then it goes into slightly more electro-y tinge things, a FC Kahuna mix on there and then some James Holden, and then it gets more into where Killer Huertz was, sort of rocky progressive sound into full on progressive stuff in the end. But it is all progressive house to me, I mean I've got records in my box from DJ Gregory and records in my box from Funk Da Void, which is sort of funky French house into Techno, but it's all progressive to me.

You can find the interview here:

The bottom line... Listen to what you like. Don't be an elitist!

Re: So what's with all the electro?

I like the electro sound that DJs are spinning. I'm a big fan too of 80s music and new wave. I don't think the electro now is exactly like the 80s sounds, but I do hear similarities.

The older prog house sound was getting stale and a change was needed. We'll have some new genre to bitch about in a couple of years from now.

No one has said that "prog is evil". All we're saying (I'll take the liberty of speaking for those that think like me) is that prog is dead. By 'dead' we mean that it still might be out there, but it's exactly the same sound as we heard 10 years ago. There are VERY few original thinkers when it comes to progressive as we all know it.

And, it has NOTHING to do with something becoming popular and then we found something else. Our tastes have progressed. I resent the remark about being an elitist; give me good progressive and I'll listen. But please, dear god, make it different than the stuff that's out right now. Personally I think all of the options have been exhausted as far as progressive goes and that's the reason that the acid sound and glitchy sound has been introduced thereby pissing off the purists.

trance has a very strong influence in the prog scene right now. most trance djs for some reason now call themselves prog djs. people like armin van burren have in fact added numerous prog records to there boxes. there was a time were there was a definitive distinction between prog and trance....

the name i've thought to be the most fitting is 'telectro'. tech-house with an eletro-ey vibe. Mazi has a couple remixes he self proclaims as telectro. but other then that i still dont think theres is an official genre name.

Not to get too philosophical, but isn't everything really a trend? The term 'trend' is purely subjective to the reference of time one uses to associate with it. Relatively speaking, even the broadest of concepts are trends.
