MP3 for being widespread and used
.ogg technically good and even better compression
    .wma - it's a Microsoft format, so I don't trust it
FLAC not bad either - but not widely used

Just my experience on the matter...

Download the FLAC Frontend here, rip the CD into WAV, drag and drop the WAVs into the frontend, choose a destination folder and hit encode (level 8 is the highest compression level but unlike MP3 the only sacrifice in encoding level is size). Its pretty much just like using any other audio encoding frontend...standard stuff, nothing major. If you're really savvy you can integrate it into Exact Audio Copy and automate the process down to 1 click.

If you have enough free space on your hard disk WAV format is the best, you can get an exactly copy of any CD.

If the free space on your HD is the problem, MP3 format with 192kbp is the right choice, of course with a good encoder!

Why hasn't anyone else realized how great aac is? (aac+ is better) I've seen some very impressive uses for aac/aac+, especially in the streaming audio category. Like you said, too bad there aren't many players out there for it.

    Ogg Vorbis..

Better sound quality than MP3 on lower bitrates, smaller files, written with streaming in mind, and getting more and more support. Even won a few listening tests.
