I was wondering if anyone knows of the good brands. I am looking to get a 1 terabyte hard drive and was looking at the LaCie, western digital. Or if somone could recommend a brand. The reasons for me getting one are obvious just to store all my music. Thanks guys/gals
You could buy any 1TB harddisk and put them in an external enclosure? That should cost less.

Oh. My. God. James absolutely obliterated the island tonight. The last time there was so much destruction, Obi Wan Kenobi had to take a seat on the Falcon after the Death Star said "hi and bye" to Leia's homeworld.
I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
Those external hard drives you see are basically your typical 3.5" internal drives that you find in your computers. All you need is an external enclosure similar to this with either a USB or Firewire connection. The difference is when you purchase a complete drive from makers like LaCie, it usually comes with some one-button backup function that you might or might not use.

do what i did m8, buy 2 500 gig instead of 1TB, its much cheaper and if the TB'r goes down @least ur not loosing all ur data, i bought 2 500 sata's and 2 500 externals so i have everything backed up incase of any misshaps
not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know of any other portable external drives that are bus-powered, like a WD Passport (i.e., that don't require an external power source)? Looking for something 250 MB or bigger. Might just go the Passport route, but I'm not even aware if there are other options. TIA.

I won't be back until next Tuesday, so if Get Carter is the correct answer, I would appreciate of someone else posts a new cap for me
I've got a WD pasport. 2.5" 80GB version and I just hook it up via USB to the laptop and it works like a charm. Small, light-weight and doesn't get hot. You can always get a 1.8" flash drive and an enclosure for it. You can find those at places online like Newegg.
We have had over 70 of them fail in the past 2 years... and their customer service bites it too.
tbh i never have any of them on for more than 10 minutes @ a time and like i say i back up all my data to other sources aswell so tbh i cant really comment fully on the subject

From what I know, only 2.5" notebook drives can be bus-powered, anything bigger, ie. your 3.5" internal drives, need an external power source. I use a 2.5" 80GB for portability, and a 3.5" 250GB for home.

I have been using Maxtor and Seagate. Personally I like Maxtor because of their 800 Firewire bus and daisy chain option. I have been very lucky with externals. I currently have over 8 external drives and I use them strictly for back up. I buy them in pairs. I have two copies of everything.
Just be careful when you go with higher gigs. They tend to have a higher failure rate.
