    my vinyl obsession

So I finally finished my master's degree and now moving out of town to start my job. In the process, I had to do something with my records, as I'll be going through a consulting/rotational program that will have me periodically relocating around the country.

Turns out that I'm leaving 4 completely full crates of vinyl behind - and another half crate. I'm taking 3 packed crates with me. That's 7.5 crates of vinyl in my possession. This past weekend, I sold/traded off the equivalent of about another 3 to to 4 crates of vinyl to a good buddy of mine.

That's 10.5 to 11.5 crates of vinyl that I had.

At about 100 a piece (counted 99 in one), that's between 1,050 and 1,150 records.

At roughly $10 a record, that's between $10,500 and $11,500 that I have put into this.

And I've never gotten one cent out of this obsession. All for that feeling I get when I'm on my own in the basement, working away with the tunes.

    That is all.

I'm going to have to as well - partially. I just can't keep gathering up so many records when I have to keep moving every 6 months. I'll probably have to go Traktor Scratch and supplement with some real vinyl for the gems.

But I still prefer the real thing...

I won't be back until next Tuesday, so if Get Carter is the correct answer, I would appreciate of someone else posts a new cap for me

That is quite the investment in music. How long have you been collecting records? I'm curious to see what you spent annually.

Agreed. It was awkward at first but you get used to it and there are major benefits. Im actually starting to prefer CDJ's too

I feel your pain. I moved this February to a new place. I took all of my vinyl and in my spare time (I had no tv, couch, fridge, computer etc) I organized and counted all my vinyl.

I have exactly 1,382 records. Based on your $10 per = $13,820. some of my vinyl I paid big bucks and some are now very very rare.

It sucks you had to sell or give away some of you stuff. I'll probably be handing mine down to my child (if I ever have one)

^^Sounds like my collection...It's a pain in the ass to keep taking them with you when you move, but it's equally as hard to part with them.

                      Re: my vinyl obsession

The beauty of records is, if your taste is strong, your records tend to gain value as appossed to losing.
Can always turn around and sell them individually and usually get a good deal back on your investment. Sometimes the stuff you think is total garbage, someone else will drop 30 for a copy of. Never know. Discogs.com is a great source to see how much your records are in demand.

Congrats Miroslav on the graduation, and best wishes on the job travels.

                        Re: my vinyl obsession

My vinyl addiction has taken my collection to about 4k records currently. Haven't come across a logical reason to do otherwise. I like to spend my money on tangible things, even if a little more expensive and bulky, totally worth it. I was in the balance pool for a while, accumulated a ton of good digital tracks. I have since dropped out because I didn't see it being worth my money to spend on digital files.
Since then, that CD book of tracks has become easily forgotten. Figures, I made the right choice.

Congrats Miroslav on your masters. You should get in touch with me if you want a place to store those records. I've got a nice closet with plenty of space to spare, so if you came around for a weekend you could pick the rest up.

I would recommend taking the vinyl. it can't be that much extra weight/space...
