2023 Rewind - Favorite Ambient Albums of the Year

These end-of-year lists are usually labeled "Best Albums of the Year." It has been pointed out that calling a list "Best of the Year" is a bit snobby and it's a little ridiculous because there is so much ambient music released that it's impossible to keep up. This list is just my opinion, how can it possibly qualify as the "best"? Labeling these as my favorite albums of the year makes more sense. In this case I called it "2023 Rewind" because I found a cool stock photo for the cover art. I'm happy that I was able to squeeze in all 30 albums into this 2-hour mix. But these lists & mixes are tough to compile. It's easy for even good albums to get lost in the shuffle. The ones that definitely did not get lost are my top 5 albums of 2023: 1. This has been an ongoing tradition for over a decade (by my count, this is the 13th year). This time, I didn’t even reach out with a friendly reminder. Mike Jedlicka of Optic Echo just let me know that he’s already on it, and here we are with a selection of his favourite vinyl releases of the year. Every single year, I complain about the amount of music, and every single year, I keep wanting even more. And even as I drown in all of the releases, it’s always amazing to discover new and fantastic sounds from a trusted source. This trusted source, of course, is Mike Jedlicka. Even if our tastes do not align on all the genres (and that’s a good thing, may I add), I can always appreciate a good selection when I hear one. Finally...Snow

It's hard to believe that in Wisconsin we had to wait until the second week of January before we finally got snow. And, of course, now we are going to get dumped on three times in a week. So I figured this is the perfect time for a snow themed mix. There's not much to say except that the word "snow" is in every track in this mix and the vibe does go well with staying inside with some hot coco or coffee while watching the snow fall outside. I've had enough of winter. So let's go from the freezing snows of Wisconsin to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia courtesy of this excellent mix from Paul Asbury Seaman. I love the "night/walking/hiking" theme of this set. Here's Paul's thoughts on the mix: “One of my best memories, in my whole life, was taking an all-night hike by myself in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, arriving at the peak just in time to catch the sunrise from the top of Old Rag, famous for its 360 degree view. This program is part of my Mystical Ambient series and I’ve tried to capture the hushed sense of wonder of both the forest at night and the star-filled sky. I hope the music warms your winter dreams. As a side note, when I was gathering tracks for this mix, I didn’t set out to make piano the primary instrument, that’s just the way it turned out.
