^ Agreed. The decline really started in 99/00 when he started playing crap like Bullet In The Gun, but a lot of his sets were good to passable, if not up to his on high standards, right up to around 2003/4 for me. I seem to remember the hour he had on the EM Ibiza Special in August 2003 as being pretty good.

The hit to miss ratio of the tracks he plays seems to increase as the years go by sadly. Still a legend for all he's given to the music scene though.

I never liked the Oakenfold Traveling CD. I thought the Ibiza one in 2002 was a lot better. The Ibiza CD is completely ruined by that awful U2 Beautiful Day track, if he had put the Brothers In Rhythm remix of Staring At The Sun on it, it would be a million times better. i think he just lost direction after that and never got it back.

It's funny - I was on the old Essential Mix Mailing list in 1999/2000 and people constantly moaned about Oakey and R1 having him on the EM all the time! Personally I couldn't get enough Oakenfold (he was my favourite DJ at the time). Even then I thought one day people will look back on that period in hindsight with affection rather than the distain that was shown. You don't always appreciate what you have at the time!

For me personally 1995-2000 was Oakey's peak. He's done some good sets since (his Perfecto Ibiza mix in 2001 for instance), but I don't think it's a coincidence his sets were at their best at the time Perfecto (the record label) were putting out their best stuff (BT, MWNN, Amoeba Assassin, Grace, Transa, etc. etc.) and Oakey had his residencies at Cream (1996-199 and Home (1999-2000).

Playing to a crowd every week meant he tried new things. I recall him saying in an interview that he liked to try to incorporate D&B into his sets which wasn't the done thing at the time. Check out his Cream White (1996) and his GU:007 NY (1997) mixes for how well this could work.

    A genuine golden period.

I always used to love his proper club sets. I always found at festivals and big gigs he would play lots of anthems. His sets at Home where brilliant.

Great post indeed. I'm really curious about that 2002 Creamfields Prague set just becuase a good buddy of mine living in Prague at the time HATED Oakenfold, and hated how much attention Oakenfold was getting. My buddy was a techno snob (nothing wrong with that in my opinion by the way....being snobby has always been a part of techno anyway), but when I asked him who played his favorite set at that Creamfields he said, "Surprisingly, Oakenfold. Beautiful psy-trance...nothing cheesy..the guy knows his audience. If he had tried to play in Prague the way he plays in other places, he'd have been booed out...but he brought it."

^ Sydney is also the one that got me into this music. Remember my mate was banging on about this DJ called Oakenfold. I taped this mix and was hooked from the first 2 minutes of Narcotik. Went out and bought Sasha San Fran purely becaase this track was on it. The rest is history..........

    freakin sweet thread.

i love oakeys EM99 series, some of the best.

I still listen to the Sydney mix here and there, I remember this really turning me on to the whole dj scene and house, etc.

I got to see oakey in Chicago and in some crappy bar in Detroit around 2000 when he first toured with dave ralph. those were good shows, still remember them.

Yeah its a bit strange how none of these 3 appear on discogs. I'm guessing the Lex track is correct as it appears on this

I loved the end of 1999 when he used to finish with Atlantis Ita - See You In The Next Life

Quality post - I'm reminiscing over X-Cabs-Infectious (Evolution Mix) as I type, what a track!

Oakie did a couple of EM's in 2000 on radio 1 - one of them had Luzon-Baguio Track on. Anybody got these?

For any old schoolers out here in MS land.. back in the days of tracklistings.org.. back when there where no forums... or download sites..

I've been looking for certain special Oakey gems that have slipped through for more than a decade now!!

Its a long shot!!! but anyone have info on any of these?

UTM - Stream (World Tour 99 - Miami set)
Lex - Verticle Horizon (World Tour 99 - Havana Cuba set) - supposedly on Barracuda
The Source - Fly Away (World Tour 99 - usually closed sets with this)

    and..

The only unknown track left in his World Tour 99 Shanghai China set.
Track No. 9 between Amanda Ghost - Filthy Mind and Moogwai - Viola

Lyrics: "If you drop the stone in the pond, the ripples begin to move..and they move over the whole pond".

    Great spacey track!!

    cheers.
