I've been planning on forcing the tagging of a thread but I wanted to wait until we had a large enough database that it wasn't a burden to create an artist before every post

I just added a "Submit new artist" link at the bottom of the Artist list. You can use it

I think you should move it to the top of the page, the list/page is too long and you need to scroll all the way to the bottom to type/search.

I prefer to not have two profiles for one person. I'm planning on adding monikers to the default search soon. For example, Matthew Dear also goes by Audion, False, and Jabberjaw. Right now if you want to tag a thread with Audion, it's not possible since there is no profile. Once I'm done you'll be able to do a search, see Audion show up in the search results, and it will tag anything for Audion to Matthew Dear in the backend.

will they automatically create an entry for that person? ie what alter ego is sufficent in itself to get its own entry?

I just added a "Monikers" field for artists, a "Recent Tagged Threads" section at the bottom of the artist page, and I fixed a few things that have been bothering me for months (but nobody else probably noticed )
