            Developer Preview released today.
            I'm liking how snappy and responsive it feels. However, the tiles menu can go do one for all I care. No place for it in a desktop. If they have completely abandoned the old Start Menu for this then I may as well stick with Windows 7.

                        Hmm the desktop UI looks like a combination of Bing and Windows Mobile, but the guts of the system, the rest of the windows and dialog boxes and everything, is still from previous versions. Would be nice if they can reconcile both into the flatter, more modern look.

                            I probably got a little overexcited before I sat down and thought about it, with my previous post.
                            This is a developer preview given out to people developing for tablets. Therefore it makes perfect sense that it is tablet orientated on install by default. I'm quietly confident that on setup with the full version it will ask if you wish to use the Metro UI. We'll see when the beta lands.

                            There's a long way to go and it's important to remember these are still alpha editions. The finished product will be a lot more refined.

                                    you can delete a dll and convert it to a standard windows8 desktop install.

                                    Edit: Just did a search, just rename "shsxs.dll"

                                            Yeahp.

                                            They're really targeting the tablet scene these days as Microsoft is the only one left behind.
                                            Makes sense as it has huge potential. But I think they should start focusing more on a business UI e.g apps, office etc. Rather than focus more of a social networking and internet browsing functionality.

                                                Slightly more elegant solution is to open regedit and navigating here:

                                                HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\

                                                then changing the value of RPEnabled to 0 instead of 1


                                                To reenable, switch back to 1.

                                                    Microsoft seems to be playing catch up to a lot of successful innovations of late. First, it was targeting the PS when they launched the XBox, then when Apple dominated the iPhone market via their iOS, it's Windows 7 phones - even though they had cruddy releases of Windows releases in the past, they didn't give a shit about the mobile market until Apple came out, jaws wide open and everything, and swallowed more than anything the rest of the industry was yet to nibble on.

                                                    Now it's the Tablet market.

                                                    Granted they kicked Sony's ass with sales of PS3 vs. the XBox 360 but that Mango OS crap and now this mind-fuckingly confusing interface for windows 8 tablet (which has carried over from their lousy Windows 7 mobile interface) I fear is not going to make headway (at least in the short term) ESPECIALLY if the iPhone 5 with iOS 5 comes out with rocket launchers blazing.

                                                    Imagine the draw of the iPhone where more than 50% of people polled said they were holding off phone upgrades to get a product (i.e. iPhone5) which has not been officially acknowledged to exist by the company. That isn't something to just say "yea that's cool", that's effing GENIUS.

                                                            Seriously mate, and if it wasn't for the bloody wake left by the proliferation / domination (imagine saying that) of the Windows platform in desktop PCs segment (ok let's also give MS Office a pat on the back), there much the company needs to do in order redefine itself.

                                                            Heck once you've used the above hack to change the mobile view of Windows 8 to classic Windows 7-ish, it's the exact same OS.
