Having already been working with Culprit in some way or another for almost four years now, it has been with abated breath that we have all waited for Parisian Shonky’s first full release for the imprint. It all started when the Droog crew, the guys behind the LA based label Culprit, invited Shonky to play on the terrace at the city’s now defunct Avalon back in 2007. Since then, everyone has stayed in close contact, teaming up for gigs the world over with Shonky even offering up a remix he did with Dyed Soundorom of Lee Curtiss’ ‘You Turn Girl’ for the label.

The title track lays down a warm and soulful atmosphere that remains throughout the entire EP but injects plenty of drive and momentum at the same time. The bass is deep and lush, rolling along the bottom end besides strong 4/4s. The blunted melodics break through hushed vocals to provide a hazy kind of swing, giving the track plenty of bounce. ‘Oasis’ has the same drug-induced funk sound that flows through previous Culprit releases but this time with a distinct chugging, deep, tech house sound.

‘La Bestia’ is a bassline-led monster, it’s infectiously funky but deep and grumbling bassline rolls away with punchy drums and tight top-end percussion. Stretched out pads and distorted synths join the party to give the track more of a euphoric feel. It’s this juxtaposition of deep, heavy sounds with the airy top level that makes ‘La Bestia’ so engrossing.

‘Kwality’, Shonky’s third original production on the EP sees him display his love for 90s US house with a track that shimmers with all the sun-drenched deliciousness of an LA rooftop party whilst still rocking the dancefloor. It’s as melodic as it is euphoric, providing the perfect end for many a daytime party for the rest of the summer.

To top it off, the EP is graced with another fine trans-Atlantic partnership that sees Londoner jozif drop a typically idiosyncratic rework of ‘Oasis.’ Laidback and funky as funky as hell, his remix is once again built a deep and rumbling, infectious bassline. Dramatic piano flourishes and guitar licks flash across the remix, adding a modern jazz feel to this Balearic, slowed down house number. Already a close cohort with Culprit, jozif will himself be dropping a full release with the imprint in the not so distant future.

03. Wiretappeur - Everybody Loves Ice Cream (Vinzenzo Remix) [Bedrock Digital - Beddigi-12]

Wiretappeur is a production partnership between Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stelios Vassiloudis (who is currently putting the finishing touches to his debut artist album for Bedrock). Their My Real Name Is track and remix of Dirty Mongrel were standout tracks on the first instalment of John Digweed's Structures series; while their two versions of Too Much Space on the Bedrock 12 compilation showed their highly original and deep understanding of the power of melody. They were also the perfect candidates to remix John Digweed & Nick Muir's Bilder (Bilder01). Now they return to Bedrock with the superb Everybody Loves Ice Cream EP.

The title track is pure, fresh and innovative deep house, which oozes melodic beauty and summer vibes. Wiretappeur’s productions have already earned them heartfelt praise and support from many of their peers as well as a wide variety of the industry's top DJs, including Steve Bug, Luciano and Josh Wink, and Everybody Loves Ice Cream is sure to follow suit. Furry Walls is a more laid-back percussive experience, dubbed-out and spacious in structure with melodic hooks aplenty.

Vincenzo’s remix of Everybody Loves Ice Cream introduces a heavier kick and ups the energy levels while slotting in an amazing dub influenced bass, which takes the track in an exciting new direction and will surely prove to be a big tune for many DJs for months to come.

Germany’s Vincenzo is one of the stars of the Hamburg club scene. His superb To Hume EP was released on Bedrock back in April 2011 to great critical acclaim. Originally spotted and guided by Steve Bug, he released his debut LP on the stylish Dessous label and is now an internationally respected producer. Spotters will already be well aware of Vincenzo’s excellent remix of Mutant Clan’s On And Amp (featured on John Digweed’s original Structures album) and his lush, piano laden deep house track for Bedrock 12 (Epic), which was a collaboration with Lovebirds (aka Sebastian ‘Basti’ Doering).

Taken literally, the track listing for Barem’s debut LP represents that fleeting moment when nature puts its house in order, when calm and clarity triumph over chaos. Of course it also works perfectly as a metaphor for those fuzzy moments of self-reflection while sprawled on a hotel bed after another mind-blowing night at the controls, or while taking stock of a musical journey that’s about to culminate in a debut album for the internationally renowned label that motivated you to start making music in the first place.

Barem has always offered a more laidback counterpoint to the edgy sounds of some of his label mates. His decision to progress in a deeper, percussive direction began with the Kolimar EP (M6

and apart from the dark, ambient intro There, this vibe dominates the first half of the album. Is and Nothing really showcase his skill at concocting instinctive, percussion driven grooves, expressing a natural inner rhythm that exploits the full stereo field. Rich, rounded drum fills puncture the hidden space behind the beats, shimmering reverbs drench the cymbals while the bass lines remain reassuringly fat and familiar, gently hypnotizing as the LP settles into its groove. By the time we reach Better the low pressure is beginning to break. Additional elements gradually make their presence felt as the beats continue to flay and splinter, phasing strings heighten the suspense and a delicate one note riff skips and bounces through spot effects and sprinkled vocal snippets as Barem coolly maintains the growing intrigue.

As if to highlight the evolving nature of the LP, the transition to the more dubbed-out Than goes almost unnoticed as the gentle undertow begins pulling us into more familiar Minus territory. Disorienting percussive delays start jarring into the void, indiscernible vocal slurs reverberate out into the corners of the room and warm, acidic bleeps start tapping at the doors of perception. By the time we reach A, the psychedelics have well and truly kicked in. The percussive onslaught of the preceding tracks gives way to a deeper, mystical atmosphere driven by shakers and hats and offset with cavernous delays and detuned pads that warp and envelope the collective consciousness in the orange-red glow of some ancient tribal ritual.

Having broken through to the other side, the eye of the storm is upon us. The last four tracks are all about the future. Clear gives ground to an abstract, subsonic groove that hisses and crackles like the dying embers of the night. A twisting motif then emerges from the flames rolling back and forth across the dance floor like some great bird stretching its wings before taking flight. Circling higher and higher, it is reduced to a distant speck before Blue - one of the definite standout tracks on the album - embarks on a spiral dive that represents Barem’s new unity of sound in one magic bullet. With an audacious swoop it scatters the storm clouds, fusing together all the contrasting aspects of his repertoire that make the album such an intoxicating journey. Sky then announces the final ascent with a long, seductive intro that crystallizes into an elegant melody, while the throbbing bass line generates another ecstatic rush of dark energy.

And then the clouds part, the sun breaks through and we’re left with the sensation of After The Storm: after the turbulence and the tumult, we’re greeted with tribal rhythms, muffled brass section and superb fretless bass riff all benefitting from a shift in 6/8 blues time signature that gives the album finale a fittingly reflective sensation – what Barem himself describes as that feeling of beauty when the dust is gone and everything is finally clear.

Nikko.Z was born in 1985,in Trikala , Greece. From a very early age,he expressed great affection for music.Bands like Pink Floyd and the Doors had a great influence on him and since then he started looking for more electronic elements and sounds,while thinking seriously of working on electronic music.The djs Sasha and Digweed were and still are his exemplar. After that,of course,Nikko.Z became extremely interested in House, Progressive and Techno sounds.

At the age of 15 he started djing and later on this hobby evolved into a real love for the electronic music.Consequently, due to this passion,he decided to also produce his own tracks.

In 2006 he attended the SAE international institute in Athens,and successfully graduated in ELECTRONIC MUSIC PRODUCTION. The last six years he has been creating his own productions in his studio. He teams up with more than ten labels worldwide which trust him and have released his tracks.

Focusing yet again on homegrown talent, Rhythm Convert(ed) serves us Belgian sensation Steve Slight's first offering for the label.

Steve Slight, a young yet very talented Belgian producer delivers an almost perfect epic release on Rhythm Convert(ed). Being a pupil from the well known Ramon Tapia and already signed to bigger labels such as Maison Digitale and GEM Records Steve certainly has the melodic feeling to get those basslines and synths work together in harmony ! On remix duties Egbert, based in the Netherlands, throws us his already more than known powerfull arrangements and precise drum programming. His remix will certainly kill many on the dancefloor and it will definitely be one of those tracks which are the perfect closure of a fine summer season !!

The title track of the EP eases us in with it's pumping groove and soaring synths only to take us by surprise with the quirky, melodic breakdown. Loading up an extra, grimy synth to do the trick, Steve takes it home with style.

On the remix, Cocoon and MB Elektronics soldier Egbert dubs it out and keeps our heads down, while he teases us with spacey FX and hints of the original's melody. Sublime moodiness and intricate textures weave through crisp drums making this a one-way stroll through bass-land.

Closing with "Make Love Not War", we have Detroit moments popping in and out keeping the track on a highly uplifting mood. What better way than this, for Mr. Slight to show off his synth skills
