I'm interested in learning to DJ, and I've been recommended by people all this stuff that I think maybe I would not be too ready for at the moment. What is some good equipment for a person to use from the moment they start learning up until they start to get gigs? I figure I'll upgrade at the point where I can get gigs, but for being a bedroom DJ for the next several months what would be some good equipment to have?

The essentials are: The AMP, Mixer, Phonez, Tablez w/ Shure Needles & nice sounding WAX...
Most people say to go with Technic's first off, yet I started up on a belt drive table system so if you don't have the money to shell out a $1000 on tables, then don't worry. I think the mixer should be the focus as to your first piece of equipment. Get something decent, then be willing to put in work. It took me 6 months to get comfortable with spinnin' and to mix decently.
One of the key's to DJing is understanding your music, what vibes which songs create, and which songs blend together. Listening and paying attention to the structure of tracks is essential..<DiSCO SHiT>Comment

if he only has two turntables and a microphone. Where is the mixer so he can use both turntables??? AAAHHHHHAAAAA!!
Try not to get the cheap turntables. I know Numark makes some pretty good turntables but they have a tendency to wear out with use. Where as Techs don't.Comment

I would start out with the best equipment first. I bought a pair of Technics and I haven't looked back; however I started out with a cheap mixer (Vestax)and I'm now on my 3rd. Needless to say that nobody put a gun to my head and told me to replace my DJM 500 for an Allen & Heath. My point is, if you get the best you'll never look back or have equipment envy.

Re: Beginner DJ equipment
get some 1200s. forget about belt driven turntables. i started with belt driven tables and looking back now think that was a waste of time.
you may consider cd decks at this point instead of 1200s.
