Don't underestimate the impact each of us can have just doing "the little things" already in our grasp. Buy energy efficient light bulbs, turn off you computer at night, turn down your thermostat, ride a bike on a short trip**. If we all do these things they add up. Even if it costs a little more, make a sacrifice for your own good.

They only work effectively once warmed up, which means your car will produce more emissions in the first minute it is turned on than the next hour (my rough estimate). What this means is that even on a short trip and back, you are polluting nearly as much as if you drove 20 miles.

The catalytic converter does a great job at reducing the pollution, but it can still be improved substantially. One of its biggest shortcomings is that it only works at a fairly high temperature. When you start your car cold, the catalytic converter does almost nothing to reduce the pollution in your exhaust.

The public could force the globel industries to change it's ways, but there has to be a unprecedented amount of consensus for that...I'm curious to wether that wille ver happen. But the protests against the war in Iraq have shown that its possible, even though probably something bad must happen first which is directly related to the greenhouse effects. It's all abut removing the doubt, then people will wake up and act.

Eggzaktly. And even if people don't react massively it's better to take action yourself than to sit on the bench and wait for the sheep to move and follow the herd.

If we don't, I think the climate change will rebalance the earth again. Maybe this is nature's way of saying: "Oh, you guys think you're smart by beating diseases that help natural selection and balance? Well, let's get even using your biggest weakness." Ignore the future people, maybe it'll go away...

I see where you are coming from with your "excuse" of apathy. But, you gotta realise i'm looking at this from a realistic point of view. Your view would only work if there is a revolution or huge backlash against the government. And, I'd agree... that would work. But again, by saying so... your agreeing with my point that governments have the power, if not... why over throw them?

Again, my point is positioning responsibility and power of realistic change. Perhaps my imagination isn't as glamorous to think of a worldwide revolution being the solution to our environmental problems.

Are you that naive? Politicians being green... wake up man, election is around the corner. Having yourself quoted in a newspaper, plastic bags... they're just words... my point is action, REAL action is required. It just reminds me of those hopeless protestors around the world holding signs and chanting words... nothing comes of it.

I'm disappointed so many people don't realise how corrupt the world is, and that the public have no say. You think the countries we live in are democratic? HAHA, what a joke. You may laugh at what I say, but society is designed and run by people even beyond our known governments, behind the scenes, whatever you want to say. Think about it, how would monkeys like John Howard or George W. Bush run a country... they're complete morons. We goto voting polls, put a piece of paper in a ballot, and we 'assume' its all counted properly. I don't know why people just accept it and put trust in complete strangers. Like the debate with the american voting poles going totally digital, people are kicking up a fuss about how it's 'unjust'. A piece of paper is a box disappearing off into the background isn't any different?

There's absolutely no turning back unless there is worldwide cooperation from all nations. And by that I mean governments, no the public, because the governments and industries utimately shape its people. And my point is, we have no control over our governments... so where does the responsibility lie?

Actually I do know it's counted properly I have done scutineering at polling booths, seen every vote and watched them counted. Australia has a really, really good system of voting. So your vote does matter.

You don't think words in newspapers influence?? Somehow I don't think Rupert would agree with you there. My words don't influence people but when people of influence use them they become influential. Federal election isn't for another year. John Howard is federal, so that gives us time to make sure we are heard!

Oh, and just as a side note... look around and see what's happening in the world. Why is this happening if us as people, as the public have supposedly so much power.

They don't use their power! It's called apathy!! and "using the what can poor little me do" line is the first symptom! You don't know what you can do until you actually try and you have to start somewhere.
It totally amazes me the excuses people come up with to do nothing, and these people who do nothing [except perhaps post in forums] will fight to the death to defend their right to do nothing.

Thanks for posting though, it gave me a chance to do something I wouldn't rest that case just yet if I were you.
