As a parent, the future defo scares the shit out of me! As a child, I held the mentality of never having children for not wanting to be resposible for bringing children in this world and watch them deal with what I have seen and dealt with myself. Now at 30 years, old I see the the horrible turn that our planet and society has taken and it's our fault!

I was talking to one of my employees about this yesterday; he has a theory that the human race is a plague/virus to this planet. We consume almost every natural resource and in turn create waste. We have this thing inside us that tells to consume and breed and that is what we do with no thought whatsoever about the conciquences of our actions. To add to this, I am amazed at society today; we are more concerned with celebrities than we are our own government and ecosystem. This really upsets me as this is what happened to the Roman Empire just before it fell. the difficult thing is that in this time of society, everything is rush, rush, rush; there is hardly time to get everything done and at the end of the day we are exausted and accomplished less than half of what needed to get done. With this being said, the majority of the populace isn't even worried about what we are doing to planet due to the constant rush and being so caught up in the latest celebrity gossip.

As we continue to travel into the future, I really feel as if we are living on borrowed time and we are in for hard times sooner than we think. I truly feel horrible for my childrens future.

Oh, and just as a side note... look around and see what's happening in the world. Why is this happening if us as people, as the public have supposedly so much power.

I disagree with just just about everything you say here. Firstly the public still contributes a significant amount. Secondly we have the power to influence both governments and big business. Look what's happening in Australia at the moment, we have politicians falling over themselves to be "green" !! Even John Howard feels he has to be seen to be doing something. It's up to us to take advantage of this situation!! We have green energy available, you can now get the environmental credentials of the companies you deal with and buy or invest accordingly. This could be a tip for everyone.

I sometimes do "letters to the editor ", and was amazed to find myself quoted in several articles all over Australia, on plastic bags in particular. Don't underestimate the power we have. !!

Are you that naive? Politicians being green... wake up man, election is around the corner. Having yourself quoted in a newspaper, plastic bags... they're just words... my point is action, REAL action is required. It just reminds me of those hopeless protestors around the world holding signs and chanting words... nothing comes of it.

I'm disappointed so many people don't realise how corrupt the world is, and that the public have no say. You think the countries we live in are democratic? HAHA, what a joke. You may laugh at what I say, but society is designed and run by people even beyond our known governments, behind the scenes, whatever you want to say. Think about it, how would monkeys like John Howard or George W. Bush run a country... they're complete morons. We goto voting polls, put a piece of paper in a ballot, and we 'assume' its all counted properly. I don't know why people just accept it and put trust in complete strangers. Like the debate with the american voting poles going totally digital, people are kicking up a fuss about how it's 'unjust'. A piece of paper is a box disappearing off into the background isn't any different?

There's absolutely no turning back unless there is worldwide cooperation from all nations. And by that I mean governments, no the public, because the governments and industries utimately shape its people. And my point is, we have no control over our governments... so where does the responsibility lie?

How long have you been using it and how would you say the hot water is? I mean, do you honestly get sufficient hot water to take a shower and such?

I have one of these as well. Had it for 10 years, works fine and yeah, about 30% less energy use. My next goal is solar with hydronic heating.

I think that this is a very interesting topic. But, I don't see the point of doing all these "power saving" techniques. I know it's very arrogant of me to shrug off doing such things, but it's only because the problem lies within government and industrial bodies. As an example, in the US in 2004, the electric industry power plants were contributing to 69% of SO2 emissions, 22% of NOx, 33% mercury, and 39% of CO2. I'm sure the trend is similiar for many other countries. Car emissions, not our fault, industries and governments fault. The technology is there for "green fuel", it just requires the infrastructure... expensive yes, beneficial yes, worth it... yes. however, then the good ol' fellas benefiting from billions of dollars from oil won't be able to make cars out of silver or stick golden dildo's up their ass. The problem lies beyond the general public, because after all, we "abide" and use products and services that are regulated by government and industrial organisations. You know, I don't have the exact numbers to prove all this, even though I have some basic percentages that I found very easily... but it just seems like the logical scenario. Again, I don't want to say people doing there part is wrong, because it is noble... but in all honesty, it's really futile unless the big men DO something about it and stop shifting the blame.

I don't see that happening until it's too late... so (from a realists point of view) we're all screwed.

Earth's Shrinking Antarctic Ice Sheet

Is the continent at the end of the Earth slowly melting? For millions of years, Antarctica, the frozen continent at the southern end of planet Earth, has been encased in a gigantic sheet of ice. Recently, the orbiting robotic GRACE satellite has been taking sensitive measurements of the gravity for the entire Earth, including Antarctica. Recent analysis of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data indicate that the Antarctic ice sheet might have lost enough mass to cause the worlds' oceans to rise about 1.2 millimeters, on the average, from between 2002 and 2005. Although this may not seem like much, the equivalent amount of water is about 150 trillion liters, equivalent to the amount of water used by US residents in three months. Uncertainties in the measurement make the mass loss uncertain by about 80 trillion liters. Pictured above is an iceberg that is a small part of the Antarctic ice sheet. Future research will likely focus on trying to better understand the data, take more data, predict future trends, and understand possible effects of these trends on the future climate of our entire home planet.

Agreed. That is why a part of me no longer wants to have children. I don't want to have a child of mine growing up in a world full of so much hate, and destruction. Soon we will have taken over this world completely like a plague, destroying our entire environment. There will be no wildlife, no clean air or water. This will eventually destroy us as a human race if we don't do something about it soon, for some critical situations, it's already to late.

^^ bout half a year now.... it's a gas model and our energy bill varies but has dropped by an average of nearly 35% since install.... that and there's no big and bulky monster taking up storage room..

Lorn, the wife and I have a Bosch tankless and love the thing. It's an interior model that, while pricey (just under a grand), supplies us with more hot water than you could ever imagine... roughly 6.3 gallons per minute continuous...

i just renovated my kitchen, got rid of the conventional heater and had installed a TITAN water heater ... it saves you 35% on energy
plus is the size of an XBox
if you live in a city like Miami you need to drive everywhere ... so i dont speed anymore and try to use the car the least posible
