I obviously can't speak for the black community, but when you embrace a term that is supposed to be offensive, it helps diffuse the impact of the word, I think. For example, now that the gay community has embraced the word "queer," it ceases to be as derogatory, IMO.
thats not the same. if gays were going around calling each other faggot, then it would be the same

the main thing here is that he said 50yrs ago we would have you hanging upside down. I definitely see that as a bad thing to say to anyone

but saying nigga is no big deal imo

When Chris Rock goes into his rants, it's meant as actual comedy. And as close as he comes, I've never seen him cross the line into maliciously slamming people with really ugly racial terms.

Regardless, he's a moron even from just a self-interest standpoint. His career will probably never recover, and rightly so.

true -- that was not the look of someone that was just going through the motions.

There is a difference, I think, between poking fun at racial stereotypes and lambasting someone in a mean-spirited way. This seemed to be very much more like the latter.

Moreover, what the hell is with white people getting pissed off because they can't use the N-word? Why the hell would you want to? The N-word is emblematic of a really unfortunate time in the history of the world, and I, for one, am completely OK with it falling out of common usage.

With all that said, I did have the opportunity to watch Letterman last night and did see the apology. Not that it excuses the act, but I have to say, he certainly seemed sincere and troubled by his own actions. Quite a stretch from the first Mel Gibson apology a little while back. He didn't try to blame anything or anyone but himself, he just took ownership of what he did and offered what he could. It will be interesting to see what comes of this now...

I hope he saved some money.

and whats the deal with the word cracker? Do white people taste like saltines? I don't know.

Out of all the words black people could use on white people, the best they could come up with is cracker? Give me a break.

If people remember a funny show called the Jeffersons, mr jefferson reffered to every white guy as honkey. I didn't see anyone saying anything about that. And mixed couples as zebra

I saw that last night. The best part is that the crowd was laughing. I think they were expecting this to be a gag.

yeah, i saw the video and, while shocking, it seems like it was done for just that purpose. i'm so sick of everyone crying racist any time someone says a word. such bullshit.

come to think of it, did kramer ever have any black friends on sienfeld?

no fucking kidding. chris rock please shut the fuck up. learn to laugh at yourselves. i have learned to laugh when you make fun of my race. do the same. the amounts of heckling that went on before the assman ()said that was not nice, i GUARANTEE you. but they aren't famous so who cares what they say, right?

given he should act like a professional and he did not, there are two sides of the story people.
