Re:: Why Dance Music Doesn?t Get Played On the Radio

Could a reason be that electronica has been demonised in USA whereas in UK it is a multi million pound business. Like many big businesses it can influence what gets played on the radio.
As rock orientated music is becoming more popular amongst the young many would say there is too much electronic dance music on our main radio stations over the weekend.

Very interesting. The point about music being too complex is dead right. Its quite rare that I'll hear a single that I really like, but put it in a mix with a good DJ at the controls and it takes on new life.

It's also not quite true that dance music never gets played. 15 or 20 years ago the charts and "pop" music were mostly rock influenced. House was very much underground. Then Hip Hop and House found its way into pop culture and what went into the charts became watered down versions of dance oriented music. Look at what the boy and girl bands are doing nowadays. Underneath almost all of the chart records is a House or R'n'B beat. Every time this happens "true" dance music evolves ahead of it, while still staying underground for people who don't like wishy washy, production line music.
An ounce of image is worth a pound of performance.

I think the statements about electronica are a bit too much generalized. Trance is a substyle of electronica as well, but I don't have to tell you all that a lot of trance records these days are quite simple and don't have complex structures. A lot of electronica records ('commercial' trance, minimal techno ...) are easy made, just like a lot of pop songs.

I admit, there should be more people listening to dance music. Here in my town Gent, almost none of my friends actually listen to dance music, something which makes it very difficult to organize an evening of clubbing.

If you consider progressive, I can agree with some statements that it's quite a complex music style, but comparing it to classical chambre music doesn't make any sense. I have had a 10 year classical music education, and now I'm producing some prog records (at least, I'm trying). Bot things are totally different. In classic, chambre music, technical skills and rules are very important. Once you control that, you can put feelings into the music.

With progressive, you have more freedom: fewer technical rules and you can put stronger feelings into it.

But these kind of discussions doens't make sense actually. I'm quite happy with the situation like it is now (apart from a lack of dance/prog fans here in my town). I love progressive and I'm happy I can listen to it in my own way, not the way media presents music to 'the crowd'. I mean, how special would a prog record be, if you go to the supermarket and suddenly, you hear - let's say Padida - when you're ordering some meat. Or you turn on TMF or MTV, and you see a video clip of a moshic track ...

Could it be that a lot of people don't like the music! Why try and justify it as a conspiracy.

And don't blame the complexity for the reason why people don't get it. Thats bullshit. Your just not intelligent enough to get it. Gimmie a break!

great article.. full of bullshit thou.. in canada we have a TV station dedicated to dance music... i mean its not the best but i mean it still has a massive audience. and sure they place trancy music but still IT HAS AN AUDIENCE.. Also in Toronto they have a station that plays Electronica.. who said that it wouldnt go far.. its a great station that plays good music.. but also so many ppl out there are oblivious to this style of music and when ppl say "it all sounds the same" then its them being ignorant to this style of eccentric music.. ppl like this guy is just stupid and has nuthing else to do but bash amazing music. he has not understanding of it at all.. if it wasnt "in fashion" then y would so many ppl love only this type of music.. most of us dont even wanan listen to top 40 anymore beucase compaired to Prog. its SHIT!! after gettin into Prog. i probably said that ive stopped listenin to mainstream music becuase its al shit..

i dont get why raves are so looked down upon because of drugs. look at the 60's!!! way worse. anyway......

Thanks for that article I enjoyed reading it quite a bit. Although a few things strike me as off for the most part it seems to be pretty damn close to what I've always believed.

#4 is such a load of shit. the author has no clue what he is talking about.

i have yet to hear any electronic music that is rhythmically complex. layering of rhythms? please...you've got the kick drum going in 4/4 with maybe a bongo sample banging out quarter note triplets. even all those funky breakbeats are pretty standard syncopations. classical music isn't known for complex rhythms, which just further proves this guy is a dumbass.

electronic music is nowhere near harmonically interesting. i can't think of any songs that have a cadence in them. most of the time it's just a simple three or four note bassline...maybe it modulates around at the climax of the tune. all the chord structures are simple as fuck too. most of the time you're just hearing simple major/minor chords...some of the darker stuff might use a locrian or phrygian scale to get that b9...
bring a few cds to a music prof. and try to convince them that this music is complex..they will laugh in your face!

and the lyrics? holy fuck. how many dance tunes have simple, retarded lyrics?

                            all of them.

this guy needs to get off his highhorse and take a few music classes before he goes on and on about stuff he clearly has no clue about
