I have done that many times. Sometimes with Habaneros as well. Once, I was scratching this cut right above my ass crack, and god damn that was a mistake.
The eyes are terrible too. I found that after handling peppers with my bare hands, washing them and the knife with a bit of vinegar usually fixes it.
