i pretty much hate sony for everything. TV's, those shitty so called 'industry standard' dj headphones, dvd players, etc, etc.
i am just getting up to speed with digital cameras, Cannon looks like the way to go judging from palmer and dom's recos and the awesome reviews on that dpreview site.
what i want is a small camera, high quality, that takes excellent pics despite it's small size (which is why i was looking at that sony, but not anymore.)
The S500 seems to be small enough, but still packing a nice resolution.
Sony and better do not go in the same sentence. That company is fucking WORTHLESS. All they make is bullshit now. And this is not up for debate its a god damned fact.
some of my friends got Sony, i went with Canon A80 instead.
paid 30% less for a better camera.
Its CCD is excellent, works with cheap compact flash cards and image quality is the best.
Sony tends to over-enhance colors to the point they don't seem realistic.
Seen that on Sony V1, one expensive camera.
On the good side, some Sony have Nightshot (i find it useless) and nighframing (that i could use)
Jenks. If you are serious about buying a digi, check out the site I listed. You can really learn a lot about the technologies, and they also do a side by side report with other close cameras. Really Really Great.
Minolta XG
Fantastic camera, fits in the pocket no compromise on the images, superb results. Bought from amazon.co.uk absolutely no regrets recommend 100%
I bought the Canon S400 Digital Elph as my first digital camera and love it. Its small, loaded with features, and takes amazing pics and videos. Its the perfect camera to carry around with you in the club or for anything. Fits right in your pocket. I've probably seen 4 times as many people carrying around a canon elph than all other cameras combined around clubs. Its just great.
Try buydig.com - I believe it retails for $418 there with shipping included, and this retailer is legit (I bought two cameras from them already).
Somy's 5-megapixel compact competitor is Canon S500 - a great camera, but the price difference is a modest ~$35; price/value-wise, the Sony is just plain better.
DO NOT GET A SONY.
While they might have the most expensive, some may say best, lenses >carl zeiss?< they are fucking crap. I had a cybershot something or other that I bought about 3yrs ago. After two years of heavy use it took a shit on me; batteries weren't communicating with the rest of it. I called sony and they wanted 500bucks to fix a camera that cost me 900. Needless to say after asking around my camera was toast... so I spiked it at my wall and destroyed it. Now there are lots of canon fans here and rightfully so.... they have very high quality leica lenses and chipsets, they are pretty easy on the wallet, and they are just nicely crafted. However from my experience I've used a few fujis, a lot of canons, some hurting sonys, and a lot of nikons. The absolute best camera you can buy for under $500 is the Nikon 4500. It has a million features and operates great as a point and shoot or if you want to get more technical. But if you want something more along the lines of that sony jenks, nikon makes a 5200 that is about the same feature wise and on price point. The camera will last forever it takes beautiful shots and they have great customer service.Thats all I have to add.
Have to disagree on the above - as far as compacts are concerned, the Sony mentioned by Jenks above is an excellent camera, and, if I could afford it, I would buy it instead of my Canon Powershot S410 (an great camera in its own right, but doesn't compare to this Sony feature-wise).
Digital SLRs are da shit too - Nikon D70 is an awesome camera that I salivate over, but can't afford the $$$
The giant industry trade show is a few weeks away - Photokina. Canon has just announced a slew of new models including the 20D SLR. Might be a good time to get a one year old model on the cheap as dealers will be blowing them out to make room for the new stuff.
