Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
I'm pretty lucky. I work in accounts and I'm studying for my accountancy qualification. My employers are a social landlord, funded by the government - and people always need social housing. I'm busy every day of the week, whatever the economy is like.
It does get depressing though - yesterday I saw a new tenancy form for an 18 year old single girl with a baby - we had just given her a 2 bed property - her rent will be paid by the council and she doesnt work. I can't help thinking whats the point? I should just get my gf pregnant and let the state pay....Leave a comment:

I work in Insurance which has been hit big time as we insure a lot of construction companies and guess what nobody's building anymore.
Have been assured jobs safe though at least for time being.Leave a comment:

Sad state of affairs chunky - UK Banking isn't much brighter .. no job losses yet, but the secure job I thought I'd see through to an early retirement and comfortable pension may be turned on its head. Should economy matters go on for a few years and deteriorate further then things could become scary.Leave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
It's a sorry thread, sorry to hear this happening to so many people... I know it is easier said than done, but the ones that got laid off should hang on and be strong in such moments....try to fight in this jungle and find another job quickly before moral depression hits!
Really sorry to read all this, and it's a worldwide disaster;
My hubby works as a consultant for an American multinational firm, and luckily where I live the economic crisis hasn't hit us (yet) the way it hit the rest of the world...but the fear is there.Leave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
5 people got laid off from my work this month, which in a company of 25 is a serious percentage. Not cool at all...the music industry was struggling as it was with other indie labels and distributors going under pretty much weekly. Now the recession's in full swing it's going to be even tougher
I'm pretty safe as I work in online which is one of the few areas of the market which is actually growing, but it's still not a great marketplace at the moment. Music is one of the first things people stop spending money on when times are hard, espcecially when it's so readily available for 'free'.Leave a comment:

I work in IT for a local hospital and there have already been 100+ layoffs in our organization this year. Two other hospitals here have cut 600 jobs this week combined. Heading into this recession I was thinking an industry like healthcare would be safe, but it goes to show that anything can happen at this point. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the coming year.Leave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
jesus, I feel terribly sorry for people facing this situation.. I dont know what I would do if I were forced to miss work for an extended period in this economy.. bartending maybe or telemarketing, something thats always hiring i guess, but still, scary shit..
I cant really stand my job, but I am thankful every day for it, and being in the telecommunications industry and my position in engineering even if the company went under or had to be sold I would still have at least 18 months of work to do to dismantle our network.. the cable phone and internet industry are the closest to being recession proof as you can get really.. people will ALWAYS find the money to pay for at least one or two of those thingsLeave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
Yeah I work with people who are so stupid they cant see whats going on. For the last 6 months we have been building cars flat out and parking them in fields around the country. The company had to halt production for 2 months to update the plant for future models anyway. If things where bad financualy they would of cut production right back like all the other Car Manufacturers but they haven't. Many people I work with cant go for 2 months without getting paid. I've told them they would be better off getting a credit card or a bank loan, but they cant see it. The company is acting as a Loan Shark. We will pay it back by working excessive overtime for years and the debt will never be paid off. The company will be given carte blanche to lay us off or make us work whenever they want if we agree. But most of my colleagues just cant see it. Me and the Union reps are really scared we will lose the vote. They will put workers rights back 25 years.Leave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
Its very worrying times for us. The company wants to lay us off for over 2 months so far 48 working days. This could yet get extended further in the future. We have a no redundancy policy at the company but I cant see that lasting. The company wants to pay us for the 2 months then we pay it back in unpaid overtime in the future. The union wants us to be paid in full with no conditions and nothing owed back to the company. But the company wont agree. So all talks have failed and The National Negotiator has been called in.
Most of my work mates have been forced to take a 17% drop in wages. We also have to take the 50 days off work which will be unpaid. Which totals up over £6000. They are also paying employees who have worked for the company less than 1 year £6000 to leave the company before Christmas.
The situation at Honda UK is worsening. The company is using the current situation to try and push through Annualized Hours. We have been laid off for 50 days without pay (They Told The Media We Would Be Paid). If we agree to the annualised hours the company will pay us while we are off work. However we will have to pay them back in overtime. But we have to agree to up to 5 months of annualised hours. The company is also not agreeing to write any hours off after a set period of time. If we agree we will have toted up 50 days by the end of March. The company will be then able to force us to work every Saturday for one year just to pay off what is owed already. Anyone who leaves the company will have to pay back what is owed in full. The company cant afford the bad publicity of not paying us. The problem for me is many of my colleagues are so scared of not getting paid for 2 months they will agree to anything. I've told many of them they would be better of getting a loan for 2 months and claiming statutory benefits. They will be taking away our liberty but my colleagues just cant see it. If they side with the company we will all be fucked big time. The ramifications of this scare the shit out of me. Even talking about this could get me the sack. The company wants to be able to accrue 5 months worth of hours and have us pay them back very aggressively. If I leave the company my pension that I have paid into for 17 years will be frozen. But I may have little choice.Leave a comment:

Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!
I work for the Portuguese car fleet management branch of a big American multinational (think lightbulbs), I“ve survived 2 waves of massive lay-offs this year...
My boss has considered me indispensible for the company, at least to an extent that if my position is made redundant (people have thought about it...), I can perform well othin other functions here. The problem is that my boss himself is not that secure he will stay much longer...Leave a comment:
