Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

well since u think tahrir sq is in the UK..then i see that u prob believe in this as well

"between 8-9 out of 10 egyptian women have suffered genital mutilation. " ,,,reaaalllyyyy? proof it, or should i refer to picture above.

but ill still answer ur lame attempt and picking a certain disadvantage caused by an uneducated group and highlight it, i really dont see what ur gain is in this point and it shows me more how pointless it is to debate or argue or even discuss anything with you and how does this point have anything to do with anything, i can do the same thing to most countries around the world and point out certain backwards acts and beliefs by the most uneducated but i chose not to coz its lameee and not on my level..

another thing it shows me that u really dont know much coz its not a middle class thing and no one really promotes it, that genitalia thing u brought up is an act that has been done mostly by the country people in egypt and its based on uneducated traditions and there has been many steps in trying to educate them about it thru small clinics, but wow man u really hit the jackpot there and put me on a spot, thanks for letting us know that there is uneducated people in egypt, duh...now there is no such thing as egyptian islam ok, there is Islam, and there is egyptian muslims ok, so separate the people from the religion, the religion dosent support such act so go find another point that u can hate on them for, just make sure u get the ones mostly based on uneducation, and please be more clear are u attacking Islam or egyptians. plus no egyptian really cares about that genitalia stuff right now, but i see why you would bring it up..and didnt u see the women all over the streets and in the protest so what religious violence are u talking about? but again i see why you would say this, its ok

and i personally dont ignore the goods Mubarak did, and u really are wrong with what u think im pro or anti or even the optimism part where i told u its wrong but u still insist, so maybe u know me more than i do, its just funny to see u act like u know it all and yet u use such words like "no, one in cairo or giza",.. lol
the backwardness of the egyptian population also played a big role in the disadvantages in egypt as well, such as pollution and chaos (i dont see the relevance of ur genitalia discovery at all here),and its not something to be denied but again the system they had was pretty chaotic so...

and btw in the era of mubarak is when the terrorist attacks in egypt started and he didnt really stop it, and Egypt to you has been like watching a slow car wreck? just think a bit more man and look around you to see the real slow car wreck, and u dont have to look far.

next 10 yrs?! i dont even know if this whole world will be here in the next 10yrs, actually natural disasters around the world would be a more greater concern to me than what ur hinting at.

whats happening in egypt is a lot more than what u think it is, people have been starving there and my points are based on actual things coz ive seen it with m own eyes and not just read between the lines in some article. watever happens i just want people to go on with their normal lives, better opportunities, cleaner standard of living, better education, democracy in elections,...etc

would you want to have Obama for 30yrs?

plus i really dont understand ur great concern in the first place, have u been this passionate about egypt before?
if you're not al wafd, a very liberal i.e. pro-democratic group in egypt, then you're views are likely to be less-democratic and therefore more problematic (at least to me).

I find it interesting that Obama said in a recent speech that the egyptians have a right to peaceful assembly, association, and speech and to determine their own destiny because they are human rights. I wonder where Obama stands on genital mutilation. Does Zero expect egypt to leap from traditional religious violence against female minors to a full, modern democracy? Looking back, I do recall it was Mubarak who demanded a total prohibition on genital mutilation a few years ago...for a SECOND time.....and was ultimately unsuccessful in his demands. That's because the egyptian population ignored this ban on genital mutilation. Even mubarak's wife was carrying out campaigns against this practice. No luck either. As it stands, between 8-9 out of 10 egyptian women have suffered genital mutilation. And the pre-eminent muslim scholars in egypt says this is the way to go! It might not be a muslim thing to do, but it most certainly is an egyptian-muslim thing to do.

Do you support this quiet rejection of Mubarak's authority? Do you think the middle class is more enlightened than Mubarak if they, in large parts, promote genital mutilation? It's funny to watch people cheer on this 'liberation' focusing on the few benefits that 'might' be gained while ignoring, in large part, what is likely to be lost.

I've begun to wonder whether it is Mubarak's hold on Egypt....or the general backwardness of the greater egyptian population....that is the problem here. how long will they cling to backwards traditions?

Do you think the illiterate class, the religious class, and the middle class know better how to run the country? Will they remove the prohibition on genital mutilation? will they permit religious fanaticism to return to the streets? Will they reverse all that mubarak has done to benefit egypt? (i'm not neglecting the problems he's created, but to ignore the good that he has brought and focus solely on the bad is lolworthy).

I've been interested in egypt here and there, and I know more about it than the typical liberal dick-stroker who thinks revolution automatically thinks 'AWESOME YAY!' But egypt, since the beginning of january, has been amazingly fascinating. it's like watching a slow car wreck. Can anyone possibly ignore it?

My optimism is slim. My doubts are high. Your optimism is high. your doubts are non-existent. I'm wondering....what is your ideal end-game in terms of where Egypt will be in 10 years (assuming mubarak leaves for good) and how do you pare that with the growing acceptance of traditional religious permeation in what was a more secular country many years ago?

edit: i knew it was not uk or france (not gonna say i knew it was actually at tahiri square) and yes i know they're praying. i guess i should could have been more transparent by asking "why are all these people looking for their contacts???"

edit2: makes me wonder, where would things be now if instead of sending $1b in money, we sent $1b in wheat and food.

well i MUST be wrong according to you. because if i'm right, then pretty much all hope is lost. i admire your exuberance for your green party, but i think it's slightly irrational on the best day. egypt has fled secularism, democracy, etc... I'd vote al wafd if i could, but my impression is that the ideals they promote do not find many open ears in cairo or giza or wherever. and for the obvious reasons.

I'm beginning to understand your optimism for egypt. it's unfounded for the most part, imo, but i understand it at least.

i think there is a very very slim shot at a new liberal experiment taking root and growing into something sustainable.

but hey, without optimism, what does one really have?

why would you say the driver is egyptian?

the van clearly veers right....and all i can think of was that the driver lost control a little bit? i'm not sure how you can conclude the driver was egyptian off that, without more?
