I've heard of this... check some of Zecharia Sitchin's books. Starting in the 1970s, he wrote a series of books based on old Sumerian translations of all kinds of things - among them, that there is supposedly an unknown planet out there that travels in a very elliptical pattern relative to Earth, and that it comes extremely close to the planet once every several thousand years...sort of like a global "reset" button every now and then. I wouldn't claim that what he says is really true (I don't know), but his books do make for some pretty interesting reading.

Actually, as far as theories go, this one would be among the plausible to me. If anything could account for the veracity of various stories passed through multiple texts, such as a great flood and the Earth staying dark for three days, it probably be something like this. I'm not saying that this specific account is true, but in general some interaction of our planet with another cellestial body out there is a real possibility for our eventual extinction.

bullshit...i remember when i was a kid. there was a program like this on NBC about revalations and the egyptian pyramids and said that in the largest pyramid in egypt, there is a timeline in it that runs out on May 5, 2005, and they thought the world was going to end then. What a load of bullshit.

No one knows when the world will end, and I doubt anyone or anything can predict those kinds of things.

As usual, Miroslav has a point though (tips hat). Celestial events have impacted life on earth on several occasions. Most people know of the dinosaur extinction (marked End K below) caused by a meteor impacting near the Yucatan Peninsula. Even greater than that event was the Permian Triassic exteniction (End P below) event that wiped out 95% of all marine species and 75% of all land species. These things have happened in the past and will likely happen again. All be it, they are far and few between, on the order of tens of thousdands of years to millions of years, something, maybe not a direct impact, but maybe a flyby as described above are bound to impact life as we know it.

on point, i read somewhere that Neugebauer was misquoted and that what he detected was a gas cloud or something....
