Re: Oil leak in Gulf of Mexico off coast of LA
They're a multi-national company doing business over the entire globe. The fact that the company was formed in Britain at the beginning of the 20th century is pretty irrelevant now.
Taking your resources? I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that one

Re: Oil leak in Gulf of Mexico off coast of LA
Over two decades since the tragedy, certain civil and criminal cases remain pending in the United States District Court, Manhattan and the District Court of Bhopal, India, against Union Carbide, (now owned by Dow Chemical Company), with an Indian arrest warrant also pending against Warren Anderson, CEO of Union Carbide at the time of the disaster. As the Union Carbide boss, Anderson knew about a 1982 safety audit of the Bhopal plant, which identified 30 major hazards. Rather than fix them in Bhopal, only the company's identical plant in the US was fixed. Neglecting these hazards in Bhopal caused the deadly explosion. .Leave a comment:

They ruined our lifestyle as we know it. Its just disgusting. I still hear the mayor of Loisianna complaining that there are still not getting all the supplies they need. I see that Alabama got screwed too on what they needed to battle the oil and now there beaches are tainted.
They should be building the Great wall of sand around the entire coast to prevent oil from hitting the beaches
It is real close to Panamma City Beach. At any rate its going to get into the loop current (or a hurricane whips through) & it will be over the keys and the whole east coast of the US. Maybe then somebody in Washington will wake up.Last edited by chuckc; June 11, 2010, 12:53:07 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: Oil leak in Gulf of Mexico off coast of LA
A co-worker's father who works for a major US oil company, had this to say:
BP has been notorious for violating safety and environmental procedures processes. In 2005, they had an explosion in their Texas City refinery that killed 15. They were held liable for multiple regulatory violations. Also in 2005 after a hurricane passed, their deep water-floating platform was found tilting badly. We sent in experts to save the platform from overturning and sinking to the bottom of the ocean. In that case, it was determined that while securing the rig for the hurricane prior to evacuation, an operator had not followed critical procedures. In the mid 2000s, it was discovered that BP had not performed annual inspections on the Alaska Pipeline; Inspections that are required by law. When the inspections were performed, it was found that the pipeline had multiple serious defects.
They are a British company doing business in our country and taking our vital resources, and messing up the environment and people's lives.Leave a comment:

US Govt is now saying there last revised estimate for oil flow was incorrect.
Its now twice what was previously disclosed.
This oil leak is spewing as much as the Exxon Valdez did every 5-10 days
its hard to believe that the Obama has yet to speak with the BP executives making all the calls. UNREAL. there is no way he can be reelected after this incompettanceLeave a comment:

This situation will hit the global world for month to come. All governments that can help should. But instead governments like our's here in Toronto rather spend money on the G20 summit in 2 weeks.
How about putting the G20 summit on hold and spend the $1,200,000,000.00 That's right $1.2 BILLION dollars in saving the worlds environment, starting with this oil spill. I mean hmmm, spend $1.2 billing on a 15 hour weekend chat or saving millions of species and preventing future down falls from this oil spill. Put the money where the WORLD needs it!

^^^ Well , that is pretty well what I saidBut the utmost pressure should be put on them to do everything possible and it seems to me blaming the government is taking away from that pressure. Just what it looks like from here

^The fact that BP was negligent and is responsible doesn't mean we can afford to assume they will take care of everything, especially given the unprecedented magnitude of it all. Thus the governments intervention.Leave a comment:

Update on Pensacola as of today...
Provide emergency disaster relief funds necessary to immobilize as many trained professionals as possible to aid and assist all of the volunteers. Frankly the Gov't can do quiet a bit, timing being the most important factor.
As with any large scale disaster such as Hurricane relief, etc, the Gov't are the ones who usually step in and build levi's and provide other infrastructure related relief when needed... I don't know what the weather is like in Australia where you live Didi, but in Florida the Gov't has helped a lot in times like these... especially presidents like Herbert Hoover for example.
Btw looking at what is happening there is not that much volunteers would be able to do until the oil hits the shore ?? In fact the disaster has happened but the consequences haven't yet. It's very scary
We have been having some totally weird weather as well. Tornados where we have never had them before. On these our governments should, and do, step in .Leave a comment:

Seriously, what can the government actually and realistically do. ?? This shouldn't be a political issue. Just speaking for Australia here , but we seem to have this thing where everyone asks what is the government doing ?? when we should be asking what are we doing ?? Is it the same in America ??

Re: Oil leak in Gulf of Mexico off coast of LA
^^^ Thanks for all the information. Much appreciated !
Seriously, it is bringing it to the eyes of the world. Which will probably translate to more people helping with the cleanup. There is room and need for both types of people.Leave a comment:
