Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

I've just read through this whole thread again and firstly it is great to see people expressing their opinions openly. Nothing beats a free and open discussion.

Now, after reading this, I believe it IS mainly about the money. It is all about marketing. People are discontented because they are buying what is essentially a promotional tool . Which makes it harder to judge on it's merits. Most want, expect, and deserve any cd they buy to be carefully programmed , and played, a complete work. No partial set can ever be that. The price should not come into it except in that there is a price, not how much it is. I think releasing live sets is not such a bad thing and I am sure I would buy some, but I would want a whole set and if I did want it price would not be a issue.

My personal opinion is that John Digweed is a very astute business man. Not that there is anything wrong with that In fact it means that he has lasted incredibly well in an industry that isn't known for longevity. Most here are very grateful for that fact, and so are producers he has helped along the way. But he actually doesn't give anything away without a price to be paid , every post is a winner in some way. Very sensible Even the intro etc on the MS Birthday mix was an ad for transitions as much as birthday wishes to Ms. Good business perhaps, but I for one would have preferred something just a tad more personal to MS than part of a 18 month old set, and wanted it in 320 The transition mixes we get , someone has to rip them them, they are not given to us. I must admit the adulation he receives here for allowing us to do that is particularly galling to me. Adore all you like for his music, but not because he gives us anything. Whoever said we should be giving back to him had to be joking. The site is almost a Digweed shrine This site gives so much to him all the time. This place with it's member numbers is a PR heaven for him . It's value would immeasurable. Imho he owes MS big time

Just like to say , I have made it clear many times that I do believe in a Djs right to control his own work and I probably stand up for Djs as much or more than anyone else here. Even Digweed on the camera issue. I support by buying every track I like, I hope the artist gets a cut from the wav surcharge I always buy the cds, for the quality and to support. Shit, I even refuse free tickets on occasion. One of the things I have come out against very strongly is that sense of entitlement. So this is certainly not about that. I'm not asking for this to be given away. Although that would have been a lovely gesture. But my first reaction when I saw this thread was, ok, how much is going back to the venue and to the people who put on the gig?? After all they paid for Digweed to perform that set.

Btw I know how hard it would be for Dig72 to write what he has written here . He absolutely adores Digweed and is an incredibly loyal fan. But I have to say he wasn't the only one left with a bad taste in his mouth over this, and for me the birthday mix as well.

Not talking about the music here in particular, because I haven't heard it.

as simple as it is, its not about the money, its just abt expectations. and anyone is free to think anything with no judgement by others. were all fans of digweed and the guy is too good that we always expect the best from him...well me personally after he blew my mind everytime i saw him live...everytimeee

i personally really need a long set from diggs that captures that good deep part and moves up to the bangin darkness (its what i like the most and why i go see him live) without interrrruptions...dont care free or not...tho if free then thats is just pure topness by john. other dj's gives us many live sets for free eventho some might not like it but still cant say much coz they dont make people pay for it...otherwise the reviews might be a bit harsher

This can be the most controversial and commented compiled of all time.

come on, it is impossible, not everyone likes the same thing.
I like this comp. others may not, sometimes we have differents tastes.
    Nothing else.

Not at all, I still buy comps simply because I enjoy them alot more than your weekly/monthly, run of the mill promos/mixes. And supporting the artists is another reason.

Why didn't he release 'another' live set on his show for everyone to enjoy, like he's done in the past? I mean what was so special about that Cordoba night, that made him want to charge fans this time round?

Would we all be happy, if Digweed decided that fans would have to pay to listen to his weekly Transitions shows? I mean why not, he could very well choose to do that and nobody can say shite. And he may or may not lose fans/support as a result.

    But hey, that's business.

Well here's a question: Cordoba was so amazing that he decided to release the set.

Out of a 5(?) hr set he reckons the early 2hrs is the highlight of an amazing night? Surely not? Are the rest of the 3hrs worse than this???

I don't think the discussion here is about paying or Digweed making a buck. We're all fans and we've all contributed to his gigs and releases over the years.

The dissonance here is around the idea that Cordoba was SO AMAZING HE HAD TO release it (and we generally go rabid over the idea of a live set from Digweed to begin with), and then hearing this.

You know, in business speak there's this thing called 'managing expectations.'
