Andrew Weatherall

Artist Biography

Real Name: Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall (born 6 April 1963, Windsor, England) is a DJ, producer, and remixer.

Andrew has been a key figure in British dance music and club culture since the acid house phenomenon hit the shores of the UK in the late 80s. Yet he remains something of a mystery, a wilfully perverse producer and DJ in the best possible sense, a musician who has constantly defied expectation. While others rushed headlong to superstar DJ status and exorbitant wage demands, Weatherall has always prized the margins as the place where true creativity lies. So, while he may well have DJed at Shoom back in those legendary days, his career has followed a quite different trajectory to its founder Danny Rampling, flirting with the avant garde, embracing a variety of different musical genres and guises from the classic Balearic material of Bocca Juniors to the twisted ambience of Sabres of Paradise.

Weatherall’s is a story of many twists and turns, a tale that begins in the late 80s with football fanzine Boy’s Own. Like The End (the Liverpool fanzine edited by Peter Hooton, lead singer of The Farm), Boy’s Own broadened its scope to take in not just football, but fashion and the music of the nascent acid house scene. It was full of satirical, barbed and downright insulting prose, with a host of in-jokes to keep the new scene in check. It was unashamedly purist and run by a team of unashamed purists which included our man Weatherall, Terry Farley, Cymon Eckel and Steve Mayes, all obsessed (in a mod-esque manner) with the latest clothes, obscure tunes and most mind-blowing drugs. The main focus of the team’s invective was the ‘acid teds’, the new kids on the block who were taking over the acid house scene. ‘Better dead than acid ted’ was the famous slogan it spawned.

Boy’s Own fans adored it ardently while its detractors saw it as a snobbish business, supercilious to the extreme. But love it or hate it, Boy’s Own helped define exactly what the acid house scene was. It codified it, gave it the coverage and standing it might not have had otherwise, and in doing so, it made two of its prime movers - Farley and Weatherall - name DJs on the emerging house scene.

While Andrew remained a key figure in a relatively small coterie, what drew him to the attention of a wider musical audience was his remix work with Primal Scream. In the same way that Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne had brought the dynamics of the dancefloor to the Happy Mondays on the classic 1990 LP Pills ‘N’ Thrills And Bellyaches, so Weatherall did with Primal Scream, marrying their drugged and debauched acid rock to his dub-ified acid house. To this day his remix of ‘I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have’ is perhaps the tune he’s best known for, with it’s low-slung beats, piano riff and the unforgettable Peter Fonda sample that gave the tune a new title, ‘Loaded’: ‘We wanna be free,’ he screams, ‘We wanna be free to do what we wanna do. And we wanna get loaded. And we wanna have a good time.’

Andrew's DJ career really started to take off after he met Danny Rampling at a party which he played at, and Danny invited him to play at Shoom. Terry and Andrew became Shoom regular DJ's and played the upstairs room there and also at Paul Oakenfold's Future and Spectrum nights. They also did parties, and started a record label under the name of Boys Own Recordings. Along with Pete Heller (who was also a Shoom DJ, and subsequently joined Boys Own and became Farleys remix partner for a long time, engineer Hugo Nicholson and singer Anna Haigh, they released two singles as Bocca Juniors on Boys Own Records, "Raise (53 Steps to Heaven)" and "Substance".

Weatherall’s mix of ‘Come Together’ followed, again exploiting another famous vocal sample, Jessie Jackson’s ‘It’s a new day... together we have power.’ But the real masterpiece was yet to come, in the shape of his remixes of ‘Higher Than The Sun’, Weatherall working wonders with Bobby Gillespie’s blissed-out croon: ‘I drift in inner space, free of time. I’ve glimpsed, I have tasted, fantastical places.’

Perhaps no other tune so summed up the zeitgeist. To this day it remains a classic of the period, a legacy that could well have cast a long shadow over Weatherall’s later projects. Cleverly, however, he never sought to emulate or mimic the success he had enjoyed with Primal Scream and the Screamadelica LP. Instead, while they returned to their rock-ist route, styling themselves as pretenders to the Rolling Stones throne, he got back to his house and techno roots, exploring new minimalist and abrasive textures under the Sabres of Paradise name. The result was three classic LPs, Sabresonic, the excellent Haunted Dancehall and Sabresonic 2 (all released on Warp, one of Britain’s consistently brilliant avant-garde labels).

Andrew Weatherall has since carved out a well-respected career in British techno. As a producer moving from the sounds of Madchester to downbeat to experimental techno through the '90s, Weatherall could've easily ridden the big beat (Chemical Brothers) or high-profile-DJ (Paul Oakenfold) waves at the end of the decade, choosing instead to pursue -- and in many ways define -- a more cutting-edge, IDM approach. He participated in two big-name collaborations which would appear on Warp Records, beginning early on in the label's now highly respected run and remains one of the world's most dedicated and top DJs.
The overwhelming success of Screamadelica led to Weatherall's place as one of the U.K.'s top remixers and producers. After a stint DJing on London's influential KISS-FM, he ran two clubs in London, and in 1993 worked fairly extensively with techno-pop act One Dove. That same year, Weatherall formed the Sabres of Paradise with Jagz Koomer and Gary Burns, who released a series of pioneering, ambient experimental techno singles and EPs on Weatherall's Sabrettes label (also collected on two Warp Records compilations). He went on to produce and remix several tracks by Beth Orton and, in 1996, form the Two Lone Swordsmen with Keith Tenniswood and the Emissions Audio Output label. After working again with Primal Scream to produce the track "Trainspotting" for the movie of the same name, in 1999 Weatherall mixed the third volume of the Heavenly Presents: Live at the Social series. The disc showcased, as had become the norm, his finger-on-the-pulse awareness of electronic music both old and new, proving that a decade of work in the semi-spotlight had in no ways dulled his senses. 2000-2001 saw two more mix records from Weatherall, as he and Tenniswood began the decade focused on DJing across the globe. Stating in a 2000 interview with NME that "dance culture now is the predominant pop culture, and sometimes pop culture annoys me," Weatherall -- as a DJ, producer, and collaborator -- continues to shape the more progressive landscape of British electronic music.

Andrew can still create a buzz and fill a club with ease but, more so has the ability to inject atmosphere into it like no one else in the business.

Check his website (Rotters Golf Club) for dates of his gigs and radio appearances.
